Veggie Cocktails Target Bad Cholesterol,
Arthritis, Headaches & More

Drinking to good health via juicing is seeing a resurgence in popularity as a new generation discovers the benefits of juiced vegetables, says nutritionist and juicing icon Cherie Calbom, MS. ("The Juice Lady").

"For decades, people with acute medical conditions and those striving for optimum health have turned to juicing nutrient-dense ingredients," says Calbom, author of a new book full of juicing tips, tricks and recipes, "The Juice Lady's Big Book of Juices and Green Smoothies," (www.juiceladycherie.com).

"You can supplement your diet with a glass of fresh juice, or go on a days-long cleansing 'juice feast.' And you can use different combinations of ingredients to improve your mood or boost your energy or even help alleviate physical ailments."

Calbom says she witnessed the transformation of a woman who had back and arthritis pain, which caused her many nights of interrupted sleep due to pain in her hands. After six weeks of juicing in the morning and before dinner, she lost 12 pounds and felt more energetic in the mornings. More importantly, her arthritic and back pain has completely ceased.

Calbom suggests these cocktails for people burdened with specific ailments:

• Arthritis helper: One handful of flat leaf parsley; One dark green lettuce leaf; three to four carrots, scrubbed well, tops removed, ends trimmed; two stalks of celery with leaves; a two-inch-chunk of ginger root; and one lemon, peeled if not organic. This makes 1 serving. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce arthritic joint pain and help combat oxidative damage to joints.

• The asthma helper: Five carrots, scrubbed well, tops removed, ends trimmed; five to six radishes with leaves; one green apple; half a lemon, peeled if not organic. This makes one serving and can be served chilled or at room temperature. Radish is a traditional asthma remedy.

• The headache mender: Half a ripe cantaloupe with seeds and rind removed; half of a cucumber, peeled if not organic; a 1- to 2-inch chunk of ginger root, peeled. Cantaloupe and ginger root have been shown to reduce platelet stickiness, which is related to migraine headaches.

• Cholesterol buster cocktail: Four medium-sized carrots, scrubbed well, tops removed, ends trimmed; two ribs of celery, with leaves; two kale leaves; one green apple, such as a Granny Smith, or pippin apple; a 1-inch chunk of ginger root, scrubbed or peeled if old. Ginger root has been shown in numerous scientific studies to reduce inflammation. It's inflammation that is implicated in heart disease. But if you are looking to lower your LDL, juice an apple with your ginger root. Apples contain antioxidants that help to halt oxidation of LDL. It is oxidized LDL that is most harmful.

• The adrenal booster: One handful of parsley; one dark green lettuce leaf; four carrots, scrubbed well, tops removed and ends trimmed; two tomatoes; two ribs of celery with leaves; a dash of hot sauce; a dash of Celtic sea salt. Serves two. The adrenal glands respond to stress; when they're overworked and fatigued, you can experience mood swings and weight gain. Hot peppers and parsley are rich in vitamin C and celery is a great source of natural sodium, both of which are very beneficial for the adrenal glands.

"As with any juice cocktail, these drinks are best imbibed as soon as possible after being processed," Calbom says. "This is 'live food,' which has a full complement of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, biophotons and enzymes. You can make it the night before, however, and drink in the morning or take it with you if you keep it chilled in a covered container."

(DES MOINES) - Gov. Terry E. Branstad today released details on the FY 2014/FY 2015 salary and benefits package he has authorized for State of Iowa employees not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

The governor has approved salary increases for state non-contract employees at the same level as provided to members of the State Police Officers Council?which is a series of one percent non-recurring raises on July 1, 2013, Jan. 1, 2014, July 1, 2014 and Jan. 1, 2015.

In addition, Gov. Branstad has authorized state non-contract employees to participate in health insurance plans that require a 20% employee contribution, but which also allows employees to earn a $90 a month premium reduction in return for participating in new employee wellness programs.  Those participating in wellness programs can significantly reduce their health insurance premium costs.

State non-contract employees will enroll in these new health insurance programs this fall and they will be effective for the calendar year beginning on Jan. 1, 2014.  In the aggregate, the raises provided by Gov. Branstad will exceed the cost of employee contributions to their health insurance plan.

"We want the best possible deal for state workers in Iowa while protecting the taxpayers who fund state government, which is why we are providing both pay increases and wellness programs to this group of state employees," said Branstad. "We are pleased to offer this great deal for all state non-contract employees, because we will have healthier employees and a better deal for Iowa's taxpayers."

"If Iowa is to have the healthiest state in the nation, it is time for Iowans to have ownership of their own health, starting with our hard-working state employees," said Branstad. "By offering these wellness programs and health risk assessments, these non-contract state employees will identify risk factors to their health and make corrections in order to live long, healthy lives with their families and friends."

The Governor's decision includes the following:

  • Employees pay 20 percent of their health insurance premium
  • Implementation of a wellness program through which employees can receive a $90 a month reduction in their health insurance premium
  • A one percent non-recurring salary increase in July and January of both FY 2014 and FY 2015 in lieu of increases in base pay
  • Implementation of merit-based within grade pay increases in each FY 2014 and FY 2015 at the discretion of department and agency directors

The decision covers 3,435 state employees not covered by a collective bargaining contract and will cost $3 million in FY 2014 and $5.7 million in FY 2015.

-

(DES MOINES) - Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds today thanked state Auditor David Vaudt for his service as Iowa's "Taxpayer Watchdog," and wished him well as the new chairman of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

Vaudt, who served as Iowa's state auditor from January 2003 to present, announced today that he is resigning his post following his election to chair the GASB.

Gov. Branstad's statement on Auditor Vaudt:

"David Vaudt has been a dedicated public servant for the taxpayers of Iowa, and we will miss his incredible work as steward of our tax dollars. David embodied the principles of good budgeting, including not spending more than we take in, and avoiding the use of one-time money for ongoing expenses. David was an outstanding state auditor and will be very difficult to replace. I will look for a replacement who shares David Vaudt's commitment to fiscal responsibility and knowledge of sound budgeting principles

Lt. Gov. Reynolds praised Vaudt's commitment to rooting out budget mismanagement on behalf of taxpayers:

"Auditor Vaudt was instrumental in finding cases of budget mismanagement at both the state and local governmental levels, and ensuring those problems were fixed before causing further harm to taxpayers. In looking out for Iowa taxpayers, David Vaudt was always fair in his dealings with local and state officials. You always knew you could count on him for thoughtful audits, information and recommendations. Because of David Vaudt's outspoken leadership on behalf of Iowa's taxpayers, our office worked with him to put Iowa's budget on sound financial footing for the first time in years. It has been a pleasure to work with him on behalf of Iowa's taxpayers, and his leadership will be missed."

Branstad notes the search for Vaudt's replacement will begin immediately.

Mexican Travelers Contribute $103 Million Annually to Illinois' Economy

MEXICO CITY - Governor Pat Quinn tomorrow will meet with travel officials in Mexico City to promote Mexican tourism in Illinois, already a $103 million business. The governor is currently on a trade mission to Mexico, as part of his agenda to drive Illinois' economy forward and create jobs. The governor will address members of the travel industry at a breakfast in Mexico City to showcase Illinois and Chicago as a visitor destination and advance Mexican awareness of Illinois' rich cultural heritage.

"Mexico is Illinois' third largest international market for visitors to our state, with 100,000 arriving by plane alone each year," Governor Quinn said. "But we can't stop now, and this mission will strengthen our economy by increasing the number of Mexican tourists to Illinois."

Governor Quinn will headline the Illinois tourism breakfast held at the Torre Mayor, one of the tallest buildings in Mexico City. In his address, the governor will highlight the great and varied tourism opportunities available in Illinois, from the city of Chicago to the Abraham Lincoln and Route 66 sites, and the Shawnee National Forest. Joining Governor Quinn is a host of Illinois businesses and organizations, including Chicago-based United Airlines and Choose Chicago, to encourage travel to Illinois.

Illinois and Mexico have strong social ties. There are 1.6 million persons of Mexican origin in Illinois, representing 12.5 percent of the state's population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Yet, many Mexican tourists come to Illinois to visit family and friends without taking advantage of the diverse activities in the state.  One of the trade mission's main objectives is increasing Illinois' market share of Mexican visitors to the U.S., as there is great potential. Mexican travel to the U.S. is expected to grow 17 percent by 2017.

"Mexico is critical to our tourism sales, marketing and public relations strategy," Don Welsh, Choose Chicago president and CEO said. "Visitation out of this market is essential as we continue to work toward Mayor Emanuel's two key goals for leisure tourism - to grow annual visitation to exceed 50 million visitors annually, and to elevate Chicago to be among the top five most popular US cities for international travel.  Mexico's travel trade community, and its travel writers and influencers have now discovered the most American of American cities. We look forward to continued success in this region."

"As tourism traffic from Mexico to Chicago continues to grow, United is excited to be a key partner in efforts to connect these two great destinations for business and leisure travelers," Rolf Meyer, United Airlines' managing director of sales in Mexico said. "This marks our 47th year of service to Mexico, and we look forward to continuing to explore new opportunities in the local markets."

According to Google, from 2011 to 2012 the highest increase of online users searching for Illinois information came from Mexico, a 23 percent increase. Since attractions throughout the state are very popular with Spanish-speaking families, Illinois has launched a re-imagined www.disfrutaillinois.com, the state tourism website for Spanish-speaking audiences. The Spanish-language guide can be downloaded for free on the website.

More than 90 million domestic and international travelers visit Illinois every year, supporting more than 290,000 jobs. The Illinois tourism industry generated a record $31.8 billion in 2011, up 8.4 percent from the previous year, fueled by a record increase in leisure travel. The 2012 results, slated to be released this summer, are expected to show another strong year. The robust results emphasize the critical role tourism plays in fueling Illinois' economic growth, creating jobs and providing additional revenue to the state.

The top markets for international visitors to Illinois, in order, are: Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, Japan, the People's Republic of China and Germany.

The Mexico trade mission, from April 3 to 6, is the latest by Governor Quinn as he seeks to promote Illinois to an international audience. Past missions include China and Japan in 2011, and Canada and Brazil in 2012.
