State of the Judiciary Message — January 16

Des Moines, January 9, 2013? On Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the House Chambers of the Iowa State Capitol, Chief Justice Mark Cady of the Iowa Supreme Court will address a joint convention of the General Assembly on the State of the Judiciary.

Live video of the speech will be broadcast live on the Iowa Public Television .3 Channel (IPTV World) and streamed live on the Iowa Public Television website (www.iptv.org) beginning at 10:00 a.m. The speech will be rebroadcast in HD at 6:30 p.m. on statewide IPTV's main channel.  A summary of the topics that the Chief Justice will address in the speech will be released Tuesday, January 15, 2013.

Members of the media may obtain advance copies of the speech January 16, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. in the supreme court courtroom at the Capitol. The message will be posted on the Iowa Judicial Branch website www.iowacourts.gov at 10:45 a.m.

WQPT BROADCAST SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE

MOLINE, ILLINOIS - WQPT, Quad Cities PBS is pleased to offer a $500 Broadcast Scholarship to students pursuing a career in broadcasting.

Last year's recipient Kristy Anne Phillipson said "As a senior in the broadcasting department at Western Illinois University in Macomb, I am honored and deeply grateful that I was chosen for this scholarship. It will help me pay for my final year at Western.  It will definitely take some of the stress off."

The annual award can be applied to tuition, books, and fees. Interested students may request an application through WQPT by calling 309-764-2400 or 1-800-877-413-2424 or through www.wqpt.org.

Applications will be accepted through April 19, 2013.

Criteria:

v Be accepted to or currently enrolled at Western Illinois University in the broadcasting program

v Reside in WQPT's viewing area or have recently graduated from a high school in the WQPT viewing area

v Overall 2.5 GPA

v Broadcast Classes 3.0 GPA (not applicable to incoming college freshmen)

v Preference given to full-time students although part-time students may apply.

WQPT is a public media service of Western Illinois University Quad Cities located in Moline, Illinois.

Branstad releases statement on State Police Officers Council (SPOC) contract agreement

(DES MOINES) - Gov. Terry Branstad today commended negotiators from his administration and the State Police Officers Council (SPOC) on their contract agreement, which was ratified this afternoon.

The agreement includes the following:

  • Employees pay 20 percent of their health insurance premium
  • Implementation of a wellness program through which employees can decrease their employee contribution toward their health insurance premium
  • A one percent bonus in July and January in both FY 2014 and FY 2015 in lieu of increases in base pay
  • Implementation of merit-based step pay increases in each FY 2014 and FY 2015

"This was a good faith negotiation that was professionally handled by both sides," said Branstad. "In the end, this agreement is a good result. The officers and staff have agreed to a contract that is equitable, will improve the health of their employees, and is a fair bargain for the taxpayers of Iowa."

The total cost of the contract to all funds is estimated at $5.9 million, with $4 million of that amount coming from the state's general fund.

Undeterred Soldier Returns to Afghanistan

An explosive ordnance disposal technician from Fort Drum, N.Y., is back in the country where he almost lost his life two years ago.

In March 2011, Wentzell was deployed to Regional Command South, where he cleared improvised explosive devices and unexploded ordnance...

Just days after the birth of his daughter, the unthinkable happened. A flash of light, heat and a sudden jolt of energy threw his body backward. He'd stepped on an anti-personnel mine attached to a 25-gallon jug packed with homemade explosives. The mine exploded, but the jug didn't. Still, Wentzell broke his tibia, fibula, heel, ankle and toes, and he was medically evacuated.

"When I came to, I was angry; I wouldn't be able to keep my guys safe," Wentzell said. "I got depressed, because I was leaving my dudes. I knew I could keep them safe -- I wasn't sure about the next guy."

But he added that he considers himself lucky, noting that others had been killed or had lost limbs in explosions of similar mines.

The recovery process was long and hard, Wentzell said, but wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. He credits his determination and fighting spirit for cutting down his recovery time.

Now deployed to Regional Command East, Wentzell said he has decided not to allow that one accident to define him.

"I decided to come back here because I felt my time was cut short and I needed to do this," he said.

University of St. Francis Names Janelle Mosher to Dean's List

JOLIET, IL (01/09/2013)(readMedia)-- The University of St. Francis has named Janelle Mosher, from Sterling, Ill. to its dean's honor list for the Fall 2012 semester.

Students who have attained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the end of the semester in which he or she has taken at least 12 credit hours are named to the dean's honor list.

Simon congratulates members of 98th General Assembly

SPRINGFIELD - January 9, 2013. Lt. Governor Sheila Simon today attended the inauguration ceremony for members of the Illinois House of Representatives and issued the following statement congratulating all new members of the Illinois General Assembly sworn in today.

"I would like to welcome and congratulate the men and women who today became members of the Illinois legislature. There are a number of extremely important issues facing our state that will be addressed by the 98th General Assembly, and I applaud their dedication to serving the public and tackling these issues.

"I would also like to congratulate Senate President John Cullerton, Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, House Speaker Michael Madigan and House Minority Leader Tom Cross, who were selected to continue leading their caucuses. I appreciate their bipartisan work on behalf of the people of Illinois.

"I look forward to working with the 98th General Assembly as we find solutions that will enable us to pay our bills and bring our fiscal house in order, while continuing to fund priorities like education, health care and social services. We must also work together to restore faith in government by passing ethics reform legislation."
