The wait is over!  River Roots Live comes to life tomorrow in LeClaire Park and our delicious Ribfest BBQ vendors will be open for lunch beginning at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free before 5 p.m. and only $5 after 5 p.m. both nights.

Iconic 90's rockers Better Than Ezra and Tonic headline Saturday night and the and wildly-talented  Keller Williams with the Travelin' McCourys headline Friday!  With monster hits like Good, If You Could Only See, Desperately Wanting, Open Up Your Eyes, and You Wanted More, there will be plenty of big tunes to sing along to.

Julia Nunes Fourteen more bands including YouTube sensation Julia Nunes and rising star Joe Robinson (who John Mayer fans will love) are sure to impress, too.  Great bands like The Congress, Eric Sardinas, Steepwater Band, The Nighthawks, Quiet Corral, and Family Groove Company will be joined by some of the QC's finest bands including American Dust, Jordan Danielsen,  and more.  Check out the full lineup!

Rib Fest We've added even more lip-smacking Ribfest BBQ vendors this year too, so make sure to grab a ballot and cast your vote for the people's choice award after trying every rib and brisket you can find.  We have other new vendors too this year including downtown's own The Ruby Slipper.  Visit their booth and bring the kids out to the Jr. Jam Tent, too!

We'd like to say THANK YOU to all of our RRL sponsors and especially our title sponsors Riverboat Development Authority and Rhythm City Casino for making this event possible.  We couldn't do this without our dedicated volunteers either; we're looking forward to a great weekend.

After the festival ends Friday night, head over to the River Music Experience for the River Roots Live Late Night show featuring Old Shoe.  This five-piece Americana Folk Rock band is sure to bring the Redstone Room to life following the fest.  Other RME events this week include Signal Path, Brer Bucktown's Traveling Tent Show, 3rd Sunday Jazz, The Tangents, Buffalo Clover, and Kidz Days at RME.

David Plowden's Iowa comes to a close at the Figge Art Museum on Sunday; go see this breath-taking exhibit before it's gone.  While you're at the Figge, check out NASA | Art, Exploring NASA, Waxing Poetic, the Corn Zone, and Sculpting Fiber, too.  If you are in the mood for some creativity, attend Create with Kelli or the Watercolor for Beginners class.

The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park on Saturday night to kick-off a four game set!   Outdoor Night closes out the series on Tuesday.  To wrap-up the week, the Kane County Cougars come to town and the Bandits will give away another set of Replica World Series Championship Rings on Wednesday night.

Rhythm City Casino will offer live music this weekend by North of 40 and River City Six.  Also check out the "State of Scott" film showing at the German American Heritage Center over the weekend.  Plus, don't forget about Public Skates and Adult Drop-In Hockey going on at River's Edge.

See you downtown!

Urges Republican Leaders and Legislators to Rise to Occasion, Vote for Nekritz Proposal to Eliminate Unfunded Liability

CHICAGO - August 16, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn issued the following statement on Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair.

"Today, as Illinois republicans rally at the State Fair, I urge them to rise to the occasion to pass comprehensive pension reform in Illinois.

"At the end of the spring session, republican leaders, who have long advocated for fiscal responsibility, supported a similar proposal that is now being sponsored by Rep. Elaine Nekritz. To ease republican concerns, we have extended the phase-in period to allow school districts and universities to assume their own negotiated salary costs over 12 years. This extended phase-in period will ensure that school districts and universities are responsible for their compensation packages, while preventing property tax increases.

"The statutorily-required pension payments guaranteed under the 1995 ramp make it very clear:  inaction on pension reform is the greatest threat to property taxpayers.

"This fiscal year, the General Assembly cut education by $210 million. These cuts impact our students, while placing tremendous pressure on our school districts, universities and property taxpayers.

"Universities have indicated, in a public letter, that they support the Nekritz proposal and are willing to accept the phased-in cost realignment.

"Without comprehensive pension reform, Illinois is on track to spend more on pensions than education by fiscal year 2016. This is an unsustainable path that will not only shortchange our children when it comes to quality education, but also make the problem worse. Illinois' unfunded liability will grow to $92 billion next year without bold action.

"Tomorrow, republicans and democrats have an opportunity to be honest with the taxpayers of our state. I urge them to put politics aside, rescue Illinois from empty promises that led to skyrocketing pension costs and pass comprehensive pension reform."

(Bettendorf, IA ---- August 16, 2012)   Brown Mackie College ? Quad Cities will introduce iPad and eTextbooks to its students during the school's class start on September 4, 2012. The college is now converting to 100 percent electronic textbooks (eTextbooks), and iPad is the vehicle for delivering that technology.

"At Brown Mackie College ? Quad Cities, we believe that we have a responsibility to help prepare our students for this ever-changing digital world," says Taylor Bracey, President of Brown Mackie College ? Quad Cities. "iPad will be the key digital tool in the growth and development of our students. This tool will also give our students comprehensive access to their instructors, expanded academic material and resources while enabling them to network with fellow students to enhance their educational experience."

With iPad, students will be able to:
·       develop their acumen for working with technology
·       access their eTextbooks and electronic resources for study and research
·       carry multiple books on one device
·       access the student portal to see schedules, grades, student email, student accounts and transcripts
·       communicate easily with instructors and other students using email, iMessage, and FaceTime

With iPad, instructors will be able to:
·       provide students with electronic handouts, presentations, and notes instead of printing or photocopying paper materials
·       access specific programmatic apps that may be utilized in the classroom
·       provide the students with greater flexibility in accessing their course work from anywhere

Brown Mackie College ? Quad Cities is also providing an enhanced eTextbook experience by combining eTextbooks with the popular iPad. iPad paired with eTextbooks will provide students with mobility, be more environmentally friendly, consumes no ink compared to printed textbooks, and will have social features that can't be accomplished with a traditional physical textbook.  Also, there are no books to buy because all electronic resources are included with tuition.

Brown Mackie College ? Quad Cities is located at 2119 E. Kimberly Road in Bettendorf, Iowa. For additional information about the college, call 563-344-1500 or visit http://www.brownmackie.edu/quad-cities.aspx?PRID=BMC2521.

CHICAGO - August 15, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today issued a statement following the announcement by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack declaring the remaining two Illinois counties, DuPage and Will, as eligible for drought relief.

"Illinois' hard-working farmers are the backbone of our economy," Governor Quinn said.  "I am grateful Secretary Vilsack granted my request to declare the entire state an agriculture disaster area to help our farmers recover from this devastating drought."  I thank Senator Durbin and Secretary Vilsack for their commitment to helping our impacted farming communities."

As record drought conditions impacted the entire state of Illinois Governor Quinn worked with Senator Durbin, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation to request a Secretarial Disaster Declaration for every county in Illinois. Today's announcement makes all 102 Illinois counties eligible for federal disaster assistance through the US Dept. of Agriculture.

(Des Moines, IA) - A new company was registered in the state of Iowa this past spring: Modern American Cinema, LLC. Iowa film maker, Kristian Day, opened up his own film distribution company in Des Moines after building a network of movie theaters from the successful theatrical release of his documentary Capone's Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye.

Iowa film maker, Kristian Day, self released his documentary film Capone's Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye to over forty theaters in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The majority of these theaters were independently or community owned businesses. Audiences flooded in into the single screen theaters in towns such as Vinton, Marshalltown, and Denison. Highlighted screenings included sold out shows in Marshalltown, Iowa City, and an oversold show in Vinton at the Palace Theater. The movie even outsold the major studio film, Battleship, on a weekend run at the Starlight Cinema in Independence, Iowa. To help build more interest to a potential audience, Day travelled to several towns across the state of Iowa to meet the theater owners and their local audience.

"There was a lot of financial and time investment made," Day says, "but it was worth it to figure out who your audience really is, major studios don't do that."

The company has recently acquired the North American distribution rights of two films, one from Iowa film maker Joe Clarke called Kung Fu Graffiti, a kid's action/comedy movie inspired by the 1960's Bruce Lee films. The other from Los Angeles film maker Shane Ryan entitled My Name is A (by anonymous), a midnight movie for the art house scene. All films will be released theatrically on the new Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved digital format. After a film's initial theatrical run, which lasts from six months to a year, it will be released via Video On Demand (Netflix, HuluPlus, Amazon Video On Demand). A DVD release will be considered based on the film's overall performance in the previous formats. Day is currently in production of his newest documentary, Is This Heaven?, the story of an ex-skinhead turned civil rights activist who is on spiritual journey through Iowa to find his faith. The film features Frank Meeink, author of the book Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead.

"Its a fresh start and an opportunity to release independent films to a larger audience," adds Day, "the price major studios are asking for from theaters is getting very high which leaves the small town theaters in a tough position."

The theater market for Modern American Cinema is very large. The company wants to work with not only independent movie houses, but also college/student run theaters, minicines, museums, and other public spaces to show films. Film makers are also welcome to submit their features, shorts, and documentaries for distribution.

Day, 26, a native of Rock Island, Ill., went to high school in Cedar Rapids and attended the University of Colorado at Denver in the Music Industry Studies program. In 2008, Day began directing and producing his own movies. His short films have played all over the world including Austria, Greece, Cuba and Italy. His films have also been screened at various festivals in cities across the United States including Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.

Freedom Salute Planned Aug. 18 for Specialized Group Who Helped Improve Afghan Farming

SPRINGFIELD, IL (08/15/2012)(readMedia)-- Approximately 60 Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers will be recognized Aug. 18 by the National Guard Bureau Freedom Salute Campaign for their sacrifice and service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The ceremony for 1st Team of the 14th Agribusiness Development Team (1-14th ADT) will be at 2 p.m.at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 South Sixth Street in Springfield.

"With Illinois producing more than $9 billion in agricultural commodities each year, there are no people in the world that know the business of agricultural like our Illinois farmers," said Gov. Pat Quinn. "I'm proud that this group of Illinois farmers donned their military uniforms and put their civilian skills to use in our nation's defense. The knowledge they passed on to Afghans will help a fledgling democracy secure a viable and peaceful future for its citizens and will help cap the discord that leads to disillusionment and terrorism."

Mobilized in April 2011, the ADT deployed for one year to conduct agricultural support operations in Afghanistan that revitalized and established a strong, growing and sustainable agricultural industry. The team provided basic agricultural needs and services working alongside the Afghan government agriculture agencies. They also taught and trained Afghan Extension Agents and farmers.

"When the Illinois National Guard sends men and women to war, we are sending the most motivated and the best trained and best equipped troops in the world," said Maj. Gen. Dennis L. Celletti, the Acting Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard. "This was certainly true of the 1-14th Agribusiness Development Team, where both their military and civilian skills were put to the test."

The team improved irrigation to more than 4,100 hectares of farmland. They also developed a functional Agricultural Extension Agent Program and hosted 34 training events. The ADT modernized Afghan farming techniques.

The ADT conducted 240 convoys, facilitated 5,145 farmer training days, trained 2,960 famers through Agriculture Extension Agents and assisted with forestry projects resulting in more than 60,000 seedlings being planted.

The ADT received the Meritorious Unit Citation and Valorous Unit citation. Thirteen Soldiers received a Bronze Star Medal, one Soldier received a Purple Heart Medal, 45 Soldiers were recognized with Army Commendation Medals and 58 Soldiers qualified for the Combat Action Badge.

The Soldiers are from all parts of Illinois. Many of them were specifically chosen for the mission based on their education and civilian background in agriculture.

Agriculture in Afghanistan accounts for 31 percent of the Afghan Gross Domestic Product and employs 78 percent of the over 30 million people in the country. National Guard ADTs work to improve the function of Afghan governmental agencies that are needed to sustain a viable agriculture sector and to educate and train Afghan farmers in modern agricultural methods and techniques. The changes will improve the quality of life and provide economic stability in the region.

The Freedom Salute Campaign program is a small way to show these patriotic citizen-Soldiers, their families and employers how much their sacrifice is appreciated. On behalf of the National Guard Bureau, the Illinois Army National Guard will present each eligible Soldier with an encased American flag, as well as a sequentially-numbered commemorative coin, certificate of appreciation and lapel pin. Families will also receive items recognizing their support and sacrifice. The Freedom Salute Campaign is one of the largest Army National Guard recognition endeavors in history. It is designed to publicly acknowledge Army National Guard Soldiers and those who supported them while deployed.

News media attending the ceremony should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the ceremony. Media attending the event are asked to contact the Public Affairs office at 217-761-3569 by 3 p.m. on Aug. 15. For more information call the Public Affairs Office at 217-761-3569.
