Jordan Catholic School construction

Jordan Catholic School has been fund raising for several months to build a classroom addition to the elementary school building at 2901 24th Street, Rock Island, housing all Jordan students (PreK-8) on one campus. $1.8 million dollars of the $2.6 million goal has been raised to date.

This is an exciting time for the entire Jordan community, as well as the surrounding area, as the dream of an expanded, unified campus becomes a reality! The school addition plan includes:

Phase 1 - School Addition & Renovation - $2.6 million
• Four new Middle School Classrooms added, wired for technology teaching
• Computer Technology, Engineering, and Science Labs
• New Music and Art Rooms with Instrument/Supply Storage
• New Multi-Purpose Room for Early Childhood PE and sports practice
• Renovation of former Kindergarten for an expanded Library
• Courtyard with rain garden for enhanced outdoor education
• New building access security system and fire alarm system, throughout all school buildings

Construction will begin in May with an estimated completion date of January, 2012.

A Ground-breaking Ceremony will be held at 1:00pm on Friday May 6th in front of the school at 2901 24th St., RI, immediately preceding the school Walk-a-thon. Students & Staff will be dressed in brightly colored walk-a-thon t-shirts.

Treasurer Fitzgerald Says More Names Have Been Added to the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt

DES MOINES, IA (05/02/2011)(readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald's Great Iowa Treasure Hunt spring publication is scheduled to be released soon. The upcoming list is the latest names of unclaimed property owners with undiscovered treasures. This is in part of Fitzgerald's continuous promotion of the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.

"The release of the spring publication is always exciting for us. In upcoming weeks, we will be listing the new names of people who have had funds turned over to the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. I encourage everyone to search for their name," Fitzgerald said. The Treasurer would also like to remind individuals they do not have to wait for the publication to begin to see if they have unclaimed property. "Individuals can go to www.greatiowatreasurehunt.com and search the entire Great Iowa Treasure Hunt list for their names anytime."

The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $122 million in unclaimed property to more than 310,000 individuals since Fitzgerald started it in 1983. Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property's owner for a specific period of time. State law requires these institutions and companies to annually report and deliver unclaimed property to the State Treasurer's Office, where it is held until the owner or heir of the property is found. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits, and safe deposit box contents.

Everyone is encouraged to keep watch for the upcoming publication. In the meantime, all Iowans are urged to visit www.greatiowatreasurehunt.com and check to see if they have unclaimed property. Individuals may also send an email to foundit@iowa.gov. For those who prefer corresponding by mail, please write to: State Treasurer Michael L. Davenport Chick-fil-A Invites Community to May Events

WHAT: The Davenport Chick-fil-A® restaurant on E 53rd Street is offering a series of activities throughout May for families to enjoy. The community is invited to take part in the following free events:

Toddler Time

May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31

9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Every Tuesday in May, the restaurant team will set up activities for young children, such as storytelling, crafts, music and playtime in the indoor playground. Chick-fil-A will provide a free small coffee or hot chocolate for parents. A different activity is designated for children to partake in each week.

"Around The World" Family Night

Every Thursday in May, the Chick-fil-A restaurant team will organize an evening of crafts and activities for children to learn about different countries around the world. The team will give children pretend passports on their first visit of the month, and children can collect stamps every week they attend during the month of May.

With two passport stamps, children will earn a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A® Nugget Kid's Meal (four-count). If all four stamps are collected, participants earn coupons for two Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich Meals and another free Chick-fil-A® Nugget Kid's Meal (four-count). During each Family Night, the restaurant team will offer children a free Icedream® with the purchase of a

Chick-fil-A® Kid's Meal. There will also be a complimentary sundae bar for children to add toppings of their choice.

The Chick-fil-A "Eat Mor Chikin®" Cow will appear at every Family Night to greet guests. Children are encouraged to dress up to represent each week's country.

All Pro Dad Day

All Pro Dad meets at the Davenport Chick-fil-A the first Saturday of every month from 9 to 10 a.m. Each month, Chick-fil-A gives away prizes to participants for attending. This month, each participating family will receive a free Chick-fil-A® Chicken Biscuit.

All Pro Dad is the fatherhood program of Family First, a national non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening families. The one-hour breakfast features NFL players, coaches and alumni who speak out about the importance of fatherhood where fathers and their kids meet with other fathers and kids at Chick-fil-A®. Children should be in first grade or older.

Congressman Braley's comments on the death of Osama Bin Laden

Braley Announces Online Voting for Congressional Art Competition

Online Voting Now Open

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Bruce Braley (IA-01) announced the start of online voting in the 2011 annual Congressional Art Competition, "An Artistic Discovery". This year, Rep. Braley's office is accepting submissions online and allowing constituents to vote for their favorite artwork. The winner of this year's competition will receive two roundtrip plane tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Capitol.

"Each year, talented students from across Iowa submit great artwork to the Congressional Art Competition," said Rep. Braley. "And this year, we're moving the competition into the 21st century. By allowing students to submit their artwork online, and allowing Iowans to cast their vote on my website to help choose the winner, we're giving more students the opportunity to participate."

The Congressional Art Competition, initiated by Congress in 1982, is a nation-wide high school arts competition sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. One piece from each Congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. for a year.

All artwork submitted to Rep. Braley's office is now displayed in an online gallery on the Congressman's website.

Braley Statement on U.S. Appeals Court Stem Cell Decision

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Bruce Braley (IA-01) released the following statement after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in favor of allowing the federal government to keep funding human embryonic stem cell research:

 

"I applaud the court's decision in this important case. Stem cell research has the possibility of leading to cures for illnesses such as diabetes, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. For me, this isn't a Republican or Democratic issue - it's a personal one. My own nephew suffers from juvenile diabetes, and I stand with former First Lady Nancy Reagan in support of the research that might one day save his life."

ADAPTIVE SPORTS EXPO PROVIDES OUTLET FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Davenport Parks and Recreation and the QCA Adaptive Sports Association will hold an Adaptive Sports Expo on Saturday, May 7 from 6 - 8pm at the Life Fitness Center, 2222 Middle Road, Bettendorf. The Public is invited to attend the expo, which will highlight the many ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events. Prior experience is not required to participate in the Expo.

The Expo will feature activities such as water-skiing, kayaking, sled hockey, aquatics, wheelchair basketball, tandem biking, tennis and seated volleyball. Demonstrations by professionally trained facilitators and athletes with disabilities will also take place. There will
also be informational exhibits and vendors.

Davenport Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of activities for people with disabilities under its Adaptive and Inclusive Programs. Governor Quinn Statement on Federal Court Decision

MARION, IL - April 29, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today released a statement in response to the recent federal court decision regarding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' ability to avert crisis in southern Illinois.

"I thank the court for making the right decision in allowing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to take the steps it deems necessary to ensure public safety during this crisis. We must now continue to work together to protect the lives of everyone affected by this severe flooding. My hope is that this decision will be upheld as it proceeds through the judicial process."

Bettendorf's Kate Gutheil inducted into Alpha Chi National College Honor Society

Faculty co-sponsors Scott Giltner and Lauren Schellenberger welcomed 18 new members into the society, which honors those juniors and seniors in the top ten percent of their class. Standing Tee Times are available on Saturdays and Sundays between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. A list of these open tee times are available on www.golfdavenport.com. Call your favorite course for additional details.
  • A minimum of 40 tee times are held open for the general public for the entire 2011 golf season, for both Saturday and Sunday Mornings. These tee times are available for reservation 3 days in advance. A list of open public times is available on www.golfdavenport.com.
  • Duck Creek Golf Course is undergoing a stream-bank restoration project on Duck Creek waterway near the Kimberly Road Bridge. This project is being completed by the Public Works, Natural Resources Division.
