Davenport, April 2009 -  Randy & Amy Johnson of Orion, IL know the heartaches and challenges of being parents to a child with a fatal disease firsthand: their son, Dillon, 15 yrs old, suffers from the devastating disease cystic fibrosis.  "Although to look at Dillon, one would see a very normal, active 15 year old, but the reality is that combating the effects of cystic fibrosis and keeping him healthy involves daily medications and time consuming treatments to break up the mucus in his lungs and fight infections as well as enzyme pills to help him digest his food properly." said Johnson.

CF is a genetic disease that affects tens of thousands of children and adults in the United States.  More than ten million Americans are unknowing, symptomless carriers of one copy of the defective CF gene:  It takes two copies of the gene for a child to be born with CF. The defective gene causes the body to produce a faulty protein that leads to abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and results in life-threatening lung infections and respiratory problems. The mucus also obstructs the pancreas, causing inability in the body to absorb nutrients in food. The median life expectancy has improved from early childhood in the 1950s to the mid-30s today; however, most individuals with CF must battle lung disease for their entire lives.

"When Dillon was diagnosed with CF at 2 1/2 years, I started to campaign on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's GREAT STRIDES Walk in 1998.  I had set a goal of $1,500, but ended up raising over $3,000!  I was amazed at how our family and friends supported us then and continue to do so today.  Many people say that fundraising is hard," said Johnson, "but that's not how parents with a child who has a fatal illness see it.  While we're glad that CF research has increased the life expectancy of CF patients to the mid-thirties, that's not good enough for us!"

The GREAT STRIDES Walk raises millions of dollars nationally each year to fund vital cystic fibrosis (CF) research and care programs and is the CF Foundation's largest and fastest-growing event. The Quad Cities Walk will take place on April 25, 2009 at the Scott County Park - Whispering Pines Shelter.  Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the Walk starts at 10 a.m.  In addition to the walk, there will be food and music, kids activities, and a silent auction.

This year, GREAT STRIDES Quad Cities plans to raise over $40,000 at the Walk to fund the cutting-edge research that has the potential for making a profound impact on the lives of children and young adults with the disease.  More than 90 cents of every dollar raised is used to fund CF research and care programs.

"Although the CF Foundation is proud of its achievements in its 50-year history, lives continue to be lost every day to cystic fibrosis.  The need for financial support is more critical than ever, said Claire Scholl, Director of the Iowa Chapter.  "For the first time in the CF Foundation's history, scientific opportunities are coming at a pace that exceeds the ability to fund them. GREAT STRIDES is a community event, and the community is uniting now to keep the funds coming and the momentum of research advances going."

Public awareness campaign showcases "Worlds connect @ your library®" theme

CHICAGO - The Moline (Ill.) Public Library is the winner of the 2009 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant.

The $3,000 grant, sponsored by Scholastic Library Publishing and administered by the American Library Association's (ALA) Public Awareness Committee, is awarded annually for the best public awareness campaign in support of National Library Week (April 12-18, 2009).   This year, libraries were asked to develop a proposal using the 2009 National Library Week theme, "Worlds connect @ your library."

The Moline Public Library's campaign will be a community "kaleidoscope" of library programs to promote National Library Week, as well as the library's entire year of programming and promotions in 2009. Librarians Lisa Powell Williams and Christina Conklin said the library is like a kaleidoscope, having many different shapes, colors and ideas that connect the community.

Each day will focus on a different "kaleidoscope" themed program such as a visit from Skylab, a traveling planetarium provided by the Rock Island County Regional Office of Education for children and families, author appearances by Chris Crutcher and James Loewen organized through the Quad City Arts' Super Author program for teens and educators, and a jazz appreciation program for adults.

Throughout the spring, the library will advertise on some of the city's Metrolink buses. The library will also create a commercial that will be aired on Moline's local ABC-TV affiliate, WQAD, during the program, "Good Morning, Quad Cities" throughout National Library Week. Outreach to area press is also planned for the weeks leading up to National Library Week.

"Moline Public Library has created a unique program built around the energy of National Library Week but that incorporates a sustainable momentum designed to carry the library into the future," said Lisa R. Rice, chair of the National Library Week Subcommittee.

Members of the 2009 National Library Week Subcommittee are: Lisa R. Rice (chair), Bowling Green (Ky.) Public Library; Elliot L. Appelbaum, Lexington (Ky.) Public Library; Gordon Baker, Clayton State University, Morrow, Ga.; Darlene Basone, school library consultant, Maineville, Ohio, Renee DiPilato, Alexandria (Va.) Public Library - Duncan Library; Susan Kowalski, Pine Grove Junior High School, East Syracuse, N.Y.; Amanda Murphy, Warren-Trumbull County (Ohio) Public Library - Liberty Branch; and Tony Tallent, Boulder (Colo.) FY 2010 Appropriations requests listed on Braley's website

Washington, DC - Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) today announced funding requests for job-creating projects in Iowa as part of the FY 2010 Appropriations process. All Braley's funding requests are now posted on his website, increasing the transparency of the appropriations process. The requests will be considered by the Appropriations Committee and the House for inclusion in FY 2010 appropriations bills.

"Each one of these projects will help save or create jobs in Iowa and will directly benefit the people I represent," Braley said. "These programs will help build new roads, redevelop blighted areas, educate workers for new jobs, make healthcare more affordable, and boost renewable energy. At this time of economic crisis, these programs will help spur economic development and grow our local economies. That's why I'm fighting to get these projects funding.

"Transparency and accountability are important to the appropriations process. I've supported the most extensive reforms to this process in history since I was elected to Congress, and that's why I'm posting all my funding requests online for Iowans to review."

Braley used two key criteria to determine his requests:

  • Saving or Creating Jobs: Projects will save or create jobs in Iowa, helping to boost the economy and put Iowans back to work.

  • Meeting Critical Needs: Projects are common-sense programs that help a significant number of Iowans meet a critical need.

A list of Braley's earmark requests can be viewed at http://www.braley.house.gov/fy10projects or by clicking on "FY10 Appropriations Requests" under the "Issues" menu of Braley's website.

A dvd video presentation from the makers of "What the Bleep do We Know?" will reveal water as you've never seen it.  Afterward, presenter Michael Grady, owner of Atlantispa, will demonstrate how to artificially make healthy spring quality water that you can make at home."
