Christian Care, a faith-based not-for-profit organization in Rock Island, has provided food and shelter to record numbers of men, women, and children this year. So far in 2009, Christian Care has served 32,377 meals to residents and the community and provided 6,177 nights of lodging, a 30-percent increase from last year. Because of limited capacity, there is a waiting list at the Domestic Violence Shelter, putting women and children at risk while they remain in dangerous situations. Christian Care has two facilities, the Domestic Violence Shelter for abused women and children and a Rescue Mission for homeless men, where it also has a community meal site. The Coats for Kids Program is seeking donations of cash or coats for needy students in area public and private schools. The Dr. David E. Lane Memorial "Coats for Kids" program, housed at the Mississippi Bend AEA, has provided more than 12,000 coats over the past six winters. Donations of winter coats (new or used) may be taken to any Burke Cleaners location in the Iowa Quad Cities. The greatest need is for coats in children's sizes 6 through 12. The board of directors of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids voted last week to build a new exhibition center and library in Czech Village. The museum will pursue a development agreement with the City of Cedar Rapids for the property adjacent to its flood-damaged building. The design process for the new exhibition center and library is expected to begin this fall, with construction scheduled for completion in 2012.
