The New Year has brought a new program of business news and features to WVIK 90.3 FM, as the station added Marketplace to its program offerings beginning Monday, January 1. Produced by American Public Media, Marketplace provides an entertaining and high-energy perspective on world business and finance. The show airs weekdays at 5:30 p.m., following local news with Herb Trix at 5 p.m. and preceding National Public Radio's All Things Considered at 6 p.m. WVIK 90.3 FM is the Quad Cities local American Public Media affiliate and a National Public Radio member station, with a translator in Dubuque, Iowa, broadcasting at 95.7 FM.

 

Martial-arts expert John Morrow will attempt to do 1,000 push-ups, 1,000 sit-ups, and 1,000 leg lifts within one 55-minute period at the Center for Active Seniors Incorporated (CASI) on January 6 at 2 p.m. It's his way of celebrating his 55th birthday while bringing awareness to CASI and earning money for the family of Jim Schick, the Make a Wish Foundation, and the Twilight Wish Foundation. Five registered nurses have completed a 42-hour orientation class for Trinity Regional Health System's Parish Nurse Program. In recognition of their new positions as parish nurses, an anointing service is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, at Faith Lutheran Church in Moline. Refreshments will follow in the fellowship hall. The public is invited. Trinity is an educational partner with the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, the St. Louis-based professional organization for parish nursing. The anointing is the culmination of the parish-nurse orientation class that uses curriculum from the center.

 

Pheasants Forever has announced that sporting goods retailer Gander Mountain has contributed $5,000 to Iowa's first Build a Wildlife Area campaign. Gander Mountain has been the single largest corporate contributor to Build a Wildlife Area campaigns since the first effort was launched in August 2003. In that time, Gander Mountain has contributed more than $100,000 to Build a Wildlife Area campaigns in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and now Iowa. The Iowa Build a Wildlife Area has a goal of raising $1 million for its first campaign year. With matching funds, that goal would create $3 million for new Iowa public wildlife areas.

 

Quad Cities residents now have access to a host of personal financial education topics at the tips of the their fingers thanks to a new Web site created by QC DollarWise. The Web site was designed by a local consortium working to promote financial literacy within the Quad Cities. The Web site features consumer alerts and information about local organizations that provide financial education classes and debt management. The Fairmount Street location of the Davenport Public Library is turning one year old on Sunday, January 14. To mark the occasion, the library is hosting an anniversary event on Saturday, January 13, at 2 p.m. The library had more than 150,000 visitors and circulated more than 300,000 items in its first year of operation. Free birthday cake and refreshments will be provided. Also, craft centers will be set up so that attendees young and old can make a customized birthday card for the Fairmount Street Library.

 

The Trinity at Terrace Park Family Practice Clinic, the new residency clinic that serves as the continuity-of-care clinic for the interns and residents of Trinity's osteopathic family medicine residency program, is now accepting new patients. The clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The clinic will not be open weekends or holidays, but an intern/resident and supervising physician will be on-call 24 hours a day.
