During its sixth-annual Mittens for Kids Campaign, The Salvation Army will deliver thousands of cold-weather clothing items to 23 local elementary schools. Drop off any handmade or newly purchased hats, scarves, or mittens at The Salvation Army at 3400 West Central Park Avenue in Davenport or 2200 Fifth Avenue in Moline between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Donations by October 1 are appreciated.
The Izaak Walton League of America presented former Rock Island Mayor Mark Schwiebert with the Honor Roll Award in recognition of his contributions to the conservation of America's natural and renewable resources. The city bought a fleet of hybrid vehicles and changed building codes to encourage green practices. The city also purchased an abandoned hydropower plant and is outfitting it with new turbines to create carbon-free power that will meet more than 50 percent of the city government's power needs. Schwiebert has also encouraged citizens to plant rain gardens and otherwise reduce surface-water runoff, and the city reimburses homeowners for part of the cost.
The Mississippi River Valley Chapter of Embroiderers' Guild of America is presenting a needlework exhibit, Needle Art in the QCA, at the Moline Public Library, 3210 41st Street in Moline, on Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to displays, there will be demonstrations and make-it-and-take-it projects for children and adults. The Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities will again be assisting the Jewish Federation of Peoria in collecting the following (individual or travel size only) to be put in Hanukkah gift sacks that will be sent to Jewish troops in Iraq and Afghanistan: shampoo, hand wipes, snacks, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, lotion, razors (not pink), hard candy, lip balm,lozenges, hot cocoa mix packages/singles, and little dreidels (no chocolate). Courtney Lyon has accepted the position of artistic director for Ballet Quad Cities. Courtney has been with the company since 2000. She began as a dancer and has since held the positions of assistant director of Ballet Quad Cities II; assistant to the project manager for One River Mississippi; and ballet mistress, choreographer, and associate director of Ballet Quad Cities.
The Extra Mile America Tour is a single bicyclist who is pedaling from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. Shawn, the cyclist and creator of the tour, is riding to shine a light on people across the country who are serving their communities. Although he passed through Davenport on Thursday, September 3, his Web site (ExtraMileAmerica.com) is accepting nominations of inspiring people, 10 of whom will receive $1,000 each.
PridePlanner of Iowa is hosting a benefit for OneIowa on Thursday, September 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Stickman's, 1510 Harrison Street in Davenport. OneIowa is Iowa's largest gay and lesbian advocacy group and was instrumental in the legalization of gay marriage in Iowa. All money donated will be matched by an anonymous benefactor. The U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration has awarded a three-year grant for approximately $1.3 million to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research for a study called "Co-Management of Older Adults with Low Back Pain by Medical Doctors & Doctors of Chiropractic." Palmer staff will be collaborating with researchers at the Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency Program; the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa; the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine; the University of Iowa Center on Aging; and the College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
