The Moline Foundation has announced an emergency grant of $50,000 to assist flood victims in Iowa and Illinois. The funds will be given to the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities to help in flood relief throughout Iowa and the Illinois counties bordering the Mississippi River. The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs will unveil and present signage designating LeClaire as a Cultural & Entertainment District at a ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, in the parking lot of LeClaire's Police Department near May and Cody roads. The LeClaire Cultural District will encompass the city's municipal building and library and much of the historic downtown area. Benefits could include tax credits for rehabilitation of historic structures, and other incentives designed to create live/work space for cultural workers, space for cultural enterprises, and access to financial-assistance programs.
Trinity's Parish Nurse program is offering an orientation scheduling option for nurses interested in merging their health-care experience and their personal faith to better serve the community. Nurses may now begin the orientation at any time of the year by completing six independent-study modules to better accommodate individual needs and church vacancies. In addition to the independent-study modules, the course includes six weekly class sessions consisting of lecture and discussion beginning Tuesday, October 7. A recent gift by Thomas and Mary Ann Stoffel of Moline will help support educational opportunities in chemistry, physics, and health-care career exploration for area teachers and children at St. Ambrose University this summer. These camps and workshops - "Kids & Chemistry" and "Kids & Chemistry for Teachers," "Health Careers Adventure Camp," and "Racing Into Engineering" - benefit area schoolteachers and 130 children in grades four through eight. The Animal Aid Humane Society, a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter, will be offering hot dogs, popcorn, drinks, and baked goods on Sunday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hilltop Ace Hardware, 1880 38th Street in Rock Island. All the money raised will go toward the care of animals.
Project NOW will be holding its annual board meeting on Friday, June 27, at its Floreciente building (135 Fourth Avenue in Moline). In celebration of the organization's 40th year of service, board members and staff will be taking a walking tour of the surrounding neighborhood. Those participating in the walk will see Project NOW contributions to the Floreciente neighborhood, including the Floreciente Neighborhood Center, outreach offices, small-business development, Amigo Park, 12 affordable-housing units, and two Head Start classrooms accommodating 40 children.
The Unitarian Church of Davenport has joined congregations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in displaying an anti-torture banner during the month of June, Torture Awareness Month. The "Banners Across America" initiative, organized by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, allows local congregations to participate in a nationwide, interfaith public witness against the practices and policies of the United States.
