Quad Cities plates four in second on way to 6-2 win over Bees

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Stephen Wrenn tied the game in the first with a solo-homer and the Quad Cities River Bandits added four more runs in the second on the way to a 6-2 win over the Burlington Bees on Tuesday night in front of 3,247 fans at Modern Woodmen Park. Randy Cesar added a homer in the fifth, helping the Bandits to a series-split with Burlington. Agapito Barrios allowed just one run over 6.2 innings in the winning effort for Quad Cities.

Matt Thaiss slugged a solo-homer, his third in the series, in the top of the first inning to give Burlington (24-21, 56-59) an early lead. Quad Cities (24-21, 55-59) responded with the first home run of the year for Wrenn, tying the game 1-1.

After tying the game in the first, Quad Cities poured on the offense in the second. Kristian Trompiz led off the frame with a double and Hector Roa followed with a single. Anthony Hermelyn drew a walk to load the bases and Arturo Michelena came through with a two-run double to give the Bandits the lead. Myles Straw extended his current hitting streak to ten games with a single that scored Hermelyn and Wrenn capped off the four-run frame with a RBI-groundout, giving Quad Cities a 5-1 advantage.

Cesar added insurance in the bottom of the fifth. His third home run with Quad Cities, a solo-blast, pushed the Bandits to a 6-1 lead.

Burlington got one run back in the eighth. Troy Montgomery collected a single and crossed the plate later in the frame on a single from Thaiss to cut Quad Cities’ lead to four, 6-2.

Barrios (1-0) took the victory in his first appearance for the Bandits this season. The Panama-native, who returned to Quad Cities after rehab appearances for the GCL Astros and Tri-City ValleyCats, surrendered just one run on four hits and one walk over 6.2 innings while striking out three. Chris Murphy tossed the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run to secure the win.

Jaime Barria (8-6) took the loss while giving up six runs on nine hits over five innings in his start for Burlington.
