Some students spend after school hours in team related sports here in the Quad Cities. A number of young people take music lessons. Then there are those that explore new ways of seeing the world around them by creating art.  That has been true for the students from Mrs. B.'s Art classes for 26 years.

By working in a variety of mediums, the students have prepare themselves for the next chapter in their academic career by investing time and energy in hundreds of pieces of art. Building knowledge and skills, while challenging themselves and the materials as they find their own artistic voice.  "As skill levels grow, so does the artist," Pat Bereskin said, "The classes, outside of traditional education, provide them with a testing ground to think creatively and work with other artists that can further develop their body of work. It's been an honor and privilege to have had some of them, in class, for 12 years." "Making Their Mark" describes the impact on paper or canvas these women have made - it also describes the captured investment to their future and legacy this body of work represents.

Amy Van Fossen will attend Black Hawk College in the fall and continue studying oil painting with David Anderson at Bereskin Gallery. "Mrs. B's art classes have prepared me for my chosen field of study because she has given so generously of her expert teaching and advice," said Amy Van Fossen. Amy won the prestigious The Lucille Brand Boeshaar Scholarship from the Figge this year.

Paige Jackson, will attend Scott Community College and is a future St. Ambrose student, "Ever since I started taking art classes, it has helped me tremendously with how I grew up and how I interact with things and I can't wait to see where art takes me next." Paige was awarded a scholarship for her artwork from St. Ambrose last spring at the Bucktown Portfolio Competition.

Quad City Arts, Hilltop Award winner, Emily Hummel will attend the University of Kansas majoring in Architecture. Emily says, "With my background in art, I am confident moving on to college and I am ready to see what life brings me."
