Manager's Memo

On a recent drive to Wisconsin to view the fall foliage and enjoy autumn's splendor, I was reminded of the beauty of change. Summer has slipped away and winter is looming, but for now, the landscape is a brilliant kaleidoscope of color. Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. I love living in a region where you're able to experience the change of the seasons, each with its own uniqueness. It made me think of the individuals we serve and of the change that takes place in their lives after they make the decision to journey down a different path.

The changing of the leaves is truly transformative, similar to the transformation that occurs when barriers are eliminated and people given the opportunity to determine their own destiny. Doors of opportunity are opened that were previously shut and individuals are able to achieve to their fullest potential. Everyone benefits when we acknowledge that people truly can change, and when we give them the support and encouragement to do so by providing training, education and skills for everyday living.

QC Office Welcomes Arthur Bishop

Staff and participants from the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) had the opportunity to meet Arthur Bishop, VP of Safer's Workforce Development and Client Services when he visited the QC office on October 18. Mr. Bishop toured all three QC locations and was treated to a chili luncheon made and served by YEP youth.

Mr. Bishop, who is located at Safer's corporate headquarters in Chicago, recently assumed oversight of the Quad Cities office. His visit was an opportunity to get acquainted with Safer's QC Director and staff, become familiar with service offerings, and discuss ways he can be of assistance to local operations. Mr. Bishop has extensive leadership and management experience, which in the past culminated in his appointments to the positions of Director of the Illinois Juvenile Justice System and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. He was also a past winner of the MacArthur Foundation Champion of Change award. We look forward to working with Mr. Bishop as we impact lives and enhance outcomes for those we serve.

Enchilada's Popular with IMPACT Participants

Youth who attend the IMPACT Program have the opportunity to plan menus and practice their cooking skills on a daily basis. Cody Eliff, one of the IMPACT staff, takes the lead in this area. Cody says his love of cooking came from his parents, who  taught him how to cook authentic Mexican cuisine at an early age. He loves to share his joy of cooking with IMPACT participants. "One of the benefits of cooking with the youth is that it helps facilitates conversation in a non-threatening manner" says Cody.

"Enchiladas are the best thing we make down here," says IMPACT participant Devante. Try out the recipe and see for yourself!

Welcome Janet Leone

On July 25, Safer was pleased to announce the hiring of a new PT Assistant Director, Janet "Jan" Leone. Jan will assist with day-to-day operations and assume oversight for the Rock Island Employment Services Program. She will also aid in Safer's exploration into service expansion in the QC region, with an emphasis on addressing the gap in services for adults with records on the Iowa side of the river.

Ms. Leone has an extensive background in the criminal justice field, including as the Director of Rock Island County Court Services, where she recently retired after thirty years. One of her greatest accomplishments while with the County was the implementation of Drug Court, which serves as an alternative to incarceration for those battling addictions. Safer is fortunate to have someone with Ms. Leone's background and expertise and looks forward to her many contributions.

Top YEP Chefs

Several times during each class session, participants of the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP)  plan, prepare, and serve lunch in the Center's kitchen. The meal is prepared using whatever donated food is available and anyone present is welcome to partake. Whether it's preparing pasta, sandwiches, or desserts, our students have impressed us with their culinary aptitude, demonstrating a natural ability in the kitchen.

Practicing independent living skills is not the only benefit of the opportunity. Our youth - many of whom can't  depend on having regular meals themselves - genuinely enjoy serving the diners. "It makes me feel good on the inside," says Jarrett. "Helping others to have something to eat made me feel like I made a difference. I believe in treating people like you want to be treated." His classmate, Renee, agreed. "Helping others makes me feel good. It's nice to hear 'thank you' from people that you've served."

We are proud of our YEP students and grateful to the Center staff for their willingness to share their kitchen with us!

Client Corner

Employment Services
Bruce, a client of the Employment Services Program has been employed at the Kraft Heinz Company in Davenport for almost three months. Bruce recently shared that because of Safer's help, he not only found a job, but also a career path. Here is an exerpt from Bruce's conversation:

What is your job at Kraft Heinz?
Packer, Stuffer, and Driver.

How did Safer's employment services assist you?
I wasn't judged on my past. I was treated with respect. It was explained to me that I would likely get an interview but it was up to me to sell myself to obtain the job. It only took 1 ½ weeks to get the job after my intake. I received suggestions for updating my resume and presenting myself for an interview.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy that I get to do more than one job. It's never boring. I enjoy my co-workers. I am also grateful for the good benefits. I have medical, dental and vision. I also get vacation time.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
I am hoping to advance myself in this company. I haven't missed a day of work and have never been late.

Other-
Rosemary spent a great deal of time with me. She listened to my "story" and placed me in a job where I was able to work full time, pay my bills and even have a little money left over. I am proud to be a contributing member of society now.
