Visiting Artist Series to feature jazz singer Kavita Shah

Rock Island, Ill.  –  Monday, Nov. 7, 2016

Jazz singer Kavita Shah will share her multicultural jazz-based repertoire with six elementary schools, a local high school, and several community venues as the next artist in Quad City Arts’ Visiting Artist Series.

Accompanied by her band, Shah’s performances draw on the cultural traditions of her Indian heritage, her fluency in Spanish, French and Portuguese, her research in Afro-Brazilian music, and her background listening to and playing everything from opera to folk to hip hop to the Beatles and Sinatra.

During her week in residence, Shah will perform for students in local elementary schools, and Clinton, Scott and Black Hawk Community College. Public performance venues include the Butterworth Center, Moline Public Library, and the Genesis Remembrance Tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Bechtel Park, Davenport.

Her residency ends with a public concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and are available at the door. Call 563-326-1691 for tickets.

Shah grew up in Manhattan and performed regularly at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as a member of the award-winning Young People's Chorus of NYC. She was a semifinalist in the 2011 Voicingers International Jazz Competition held in Zory, Poland, and has since toured extensively across North America and Europe. Shah received her master's in Jazz Voice from Manhattan School of Music and holds a B.A. from Harvard College in Latin American Studies.

The 2016-2017 season of the Visiting Artist Series features nine performing arts residencies, including a theater artist, musical ensembles, and tap dancers, and runs through April 2017.
