Fort Worth, TX – July 23, 2016 – Susan G. Komen® recognized Susan G. Komen® Iowa with the “Affiliate of the Year Award” at its annual Komen Leadership Conference. This honor recognizes the Affiliate that exhibited the best overall effort in advancing the Komen vision and promise to end breast cancer forever, and demonstrated a commitment to collaboration across the organization.
“We are proud and honored to receive this recognition from our national headquarters”, said Rebecca Brommel, Board President of Komen Iowa. “Our pride stems from being chosen from among a network of so many great sister Affiliates across the country who work every day to realize Komen’s mission of a world without breast cancer. We are honored to accept this recognition on behalf of Komen Iowa’s donors, sponsors, partners, grantees and volunteers that work tirelessly to support our vision and promise.”
Komen Iowa operates on five principles—inclusion, stewardship, honesty, openness, passion and empowerment. Following these guiding principles, Komen Iowa provided screening services for more than 1,400 high-risk individuals within their community in the past year. They also received accreditation from Des Moines University, the largest osteopathic college in the state, allowing them to present critical research findings to medical professionals and lay audiences.
Further, Komen Iowa has demonstrated excellence in their ability to diversify revenue through new partnerships. For the past three years, they have partnered with the Iowa Wild, a professional minor league hockey team, to put on Pink in the Rink—a hockey game devoted to breast cancer awareness and fundraising that brings in more than 10,000 people and $30,000. Thanks to this, and other funding raising initiatives, Komen Iowa experienced a 23 percent increase in third-party revenue last fiscal year alone.
Komen Iowa’s devotion to collaboration was also instrumental in this year’s merger with Komen Southeast Iowa. Their contribution and commitment to all aspects of the merger showcased their passion behind our mission and helped provide a resource to be used for future Affiliate mergers. Moving forward, Komen Iowa seeks to increase mammogram rates, decrease breast cancer mortality and late-stage diagnosis rates, expand their role in providing medical education and increase third-party event revenue.
