Quad Cities, IA/IL: The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities is asking for the community’s support to send one of their teens to a boxing tournament in Florida. Central High School student, Jaylin “The Bull” Buckley has been training with Pena’s Davenport Boxing Club and has holds wins including three-state boxing champion, two regional championships, a national championship, Junior Olympics, four national titles, was awarded most outstanding boxer twice and an Iowa State Golden Glove winner with a perfect record of eleven wins and zero defeats.
Buckley now has the opportunity to compete at the Women’s National Golden Gloves tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from July 4th – 9th, 2016. The only thing standing in her way is getting there. Between travel, lodging and food, the total cost for the trip is around $3,000. This tournament includes some of the nation’s best competitors as well as college and Olympic recruiters.
What makes Jaylin’s story so impactful is her journey. Her family currently lives in our Family Service Center Transitional Housing program and has for over a year. Not only does she hold boxing titles, but she also boasts a 3.75 GPA and is considering attending Olivet Nazarene University in Michigan to continue her education and boxing training. She is a driven and focused individual who has the discipline to not only succeed in boxing, but in life by fighting the cycle. “This is what The Salvation Army is all about, providing a nurturing environment to help transform the lives of all those who live with us, no matter their age,” noted Lindsay Hines, Transitional Housing Director for The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities.
