Modern Woodmen of America announces Be an Everyday Hero project in this 15th anniversary year of 9/11

Employees from Modern Woodmen of America’s home office are planning a special volunteer project. The Be an Everyday Hero project encourages employees, Quad Citians and individuals throughout the country to show support for first responders and military members this summer.
A variety of events and fundraisers are planned for 2016, including:
June 14: Modern Woodmen Night at Modern Woodmen Park
This Flag Day-themed event invites local Modern Woodmen members, legislators and individuals from the Rock Island Arsenal to attend a ballgame for free. The event will include a flag unfurling on the field, a speech from Modern Woodmen president and CEO Kenny Massey, an explanation of the Be an Everyday Hero project, a “Be an Everyday Hero” Rascal bobblehead giveaway and a Be an Everyday Hero T-shirt fundraiser to benefit the Illowa Exploring program.
The Illowa Exploring program is a hands-on, career-focused program that connects young people with career fields that interest them, including military, law enforcement, and fire and emergency services.
July 18-23: 9/11 Never Forget Memorial Exhibit, west lot of Schwiebert Park.
This traveling exhibit was created to honor Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who lost his life helping others during the 9/11 attacks. The 1,000-square-foot memorial, which includes artifacts, videos and live tours from FDNY firefighters, travels the country as an educational resource and poignant reminder of that tragic day. It will be open for free viewing to the general public during specified times, courtesy of Modern Woodmen.
July 22: Modern Woodmen trivia night fundraiser
Proceeds from this annual fundraising event will go toward the purchase and training of a K-9 police dog for the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group (QCMEG).
August 26: Day of service for troops overseas
After donating personal care items in early August, Modern Woodmen employees will spend an afternoon volunteering at the home office to prepare care packages for United States military members serving overseas. This project is being coordinated by employees and Jason’s Box.
September 11: Salute to Heroes march and community event
Local police and fire departments, military members, high schools and more will join Modern Woodmen employees in a march from Modern Woodmen’s home office in Rock Island to Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport. The public is encouraged to help honor our local heroes and then join Modern Woodmen at a community event at Modern Woodmen Park. The event will feature hero recognition, a check presentation to project fundraising recipients, safety awareness demonstrations and more.
