SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Continuing his work to keep more money in the pockets of local senior citizens, state Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is reiterating his opposition to recent talks of a new state tax placed on retirement income, which has again resurfaced as a possible avenue toward solving Illinois’ fiscal problems.
“While Illinois remains locked in the budget impasse, taxing retirement income is a shortsighted attempt to solve our fiscal problems on the backs of seniors,” Smiddy said. “A handful of think tanks have once more begun entertaining the idea that Illinois tax retirement income in an attempt to rectify the budget crisis currently being faced. This is an unwarranted burden that would be placed on our retirees that I refuse to support.”
Smiddy has joined a bipartisan group of legislators who oppose placing a state tax on retirement income, such as pensions and Social Security. House Resolution 890, sponsored by Smiddy, urges the Illinois General Assembly not to alter the tax code by placing a new tax on retirement income.
“Illinois is a good place where people come to retire, and we shouldn’t impose a new retirement tax on our seniors to solve our current budget problems,” Smiddy said. “It is time that we come together to pass a realistic budget, and avoid reckless proposals that burden retirees in Illinois.”
