Descendant Julia Adrian Foote writes of century-long life still impacting state

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – People throughout Nebraska knew Dr. Eugene C. Foote, a gifted and caring physician active in his community. Realizing that no one compiled a retrospective on his life when he died in 1979, his great-granddaughter, author Julia Adrian Foote, hopes to right that wrong with her new book, “A Hundred Year Adventure: The life and exploits of Eugene Clair Foote” (published by Lulu).

Born in a sod house to homesteading parents originally from New York, “Gene” grew up during the boom years of America in the 1880s. As a boy, he dreamed of being an adventurer. However, common sense and the demands of his parents culminated in graduation from Creighton’s School of Medicine in 1905, which funded his adventurous whims and kept a roof over his head. He became the patriarch of a medical family, with five generations involved in the medical profession. He created a standard of quality health care that is remembered today.

“The book tells the tale of a man who made such a difference on the world and in his community that people remember him fondly even almost 40 years after his death,” Foote explains. “I think the modern reader will be amazed with his life and what he was able to do simply by following the philosophy of working hard and playing hard.”

She hopes the book inspires readers to research and write about their own family histories.
