Rock Island, IL: New learning programs for eight to 12-year-olds, often called "tweens," begin next week at the Rock Island Library.
The library will offer Tween Gaming nights on the second Monday of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. Kids ages eight to 12 will play an age appropriate selection of video games for fun and learning on the library's large screen, and meet other kids who love gaming. Tween Gaming nights will be offered Monday, Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 14, and April 11. The programs are free.
The library will also offer a Tween Galaxy Scavenger Hunt on Monday, Jan. 25 as part of USE the FORCE: READ winter reading activities. The event takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and will start in the Main Library Community Room. There's a great disturbance in the force, and it's up to kids ages 8 to 12 to fix it by finding all the clues in the Rock Island Library galaxy. Fight the dark side and win prizes for finding all the clues. The event is free and does not require registration.
Other events for school age children include the library's "STEM-azing" afterschool learning programs at the 30/31 Branch. STEM-azing offers a new, hands-on science, technology, engineering or math lproject at 4:00 pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street. Projects include "Art BOTS" on Jan. 13, where kids will make a robotic art pen out of an electric toothbrush motor, and "Little Bits" on Feb. 10, where kids will make a flashlight with circuits. STEM-azing programs are free and do not require registration.
