Rock Island, IL – February 20, 2016: On March 5, 2016, 2PM, in the downtown Rock Island Public Library’s second floor community room, the Rock Island Preservation Society will be hosting a workshop to teach participants how to research residential homes via online resources. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about websites, online databases and some tips and tricks to expedite researching older properties—all from the comfort of one’s own home! The presentation will last approximately one hour and is free to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops and library cards as members of the society will be present to personally assist starting a research project afterwards.
Information that can be discovered from online property research may include when the structure was built and who for, how many times the property has been sold, previous owners and structural modifications, such as the addition of a room. This can, in turn, be used for further research on streets or neighborhoods and their development through history. Discovering the original builder of the home can provide insights into the home such as determining the original owner’s occupation by searching for their name in city historical business records.
Genealogy and historical research is a hobby enjoyed by millions of people. Not only a fun hobby, historic resources are a billion dollar industry and a primary tourism draw for the Quad Cities. The Rock Island Preservation Society hopes that by educating the public on ways to research their own homes, they will become interested in historic preservation and find value in preserving older properties. The event is not being organized nor sponsored by the Rock Island Public Library but is simply opening the space for the Rock Island Preservation Society’s use. Participants do not have to be residents of Rock Island nor possess a Rock Island Library Card, as library cards from Rock Island, Davenport, Moline and Bettendorf can be used at all Quad City libraries.
