CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Nov. 28) - Trees Forever, the City of Cedar Rapids and the Holloway Environmental Trust announce Kaid Benfield, author of "People Habitat: 25 Ways to Think About Greener, Healthier Cities," will be the keynote speaker at Our Woodland Legacy Symposium: Why Cities Need Nature (and Nature Needs Cities?)
The symposium is on Thursday, December 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Country Club, located at 550 27th St. Dr. SE.
"For ten years, this symposium has served as an educational forum where community leaders and advocates come together to learn and hear the latest research from experts on how to live 'green' and how to create sustainable cities," Trees Forever Founding President and CEO Shannon Ramsay said.
Benfield serves as senior counsel for environmental strategies at PlaceMakers LLC, a city and town planning consultancy working across the United States and Canada.
"Given the 1,000 Acres program that the City of Cedar Rapids has committed to and Marion's Step Into Nature initiative happening in Linn County, Benfield's expertise comes at the perfect time," Trees Forever Field Coordinator Dustin Hinrichs said. "Our Woodland Legacy helps inspire new ideas to make our communities more environmentally friendly."
Benfield was named one of "the most influential people in sustainable planning and development" by the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, and the website Future Cities called him "one of the top 100 city innovators worldwide." In addition, he was voted one of the "top urban thinkers" on the leading city planning website, Planetizen.com.
Additional speakers include Joanna Eckles, who started Project BirdSafe for Audubon Minnesota in 2006, and Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller, M.D., OB-Gyn and integrative medicine physician at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Hackenmiller will talk about her experience using nature therapy with patients, and Eckles will focus on how cities can help bird habitat.
