Join Us in Person or Online August 16

Hope you can join me at the Heartland Institute on August 16 when I will be discussing my new book, Creating the Declaration of Independence, which takes you to the weeks before July 4, 1776, and into the minds of Richard Henry Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.

You can register for the event, which begins at 5:30 PM CDT here. If you are unable to join us in person, watch the webcast at this link beginning at 6 PM.

We recently celebrated the 241st anniversary of our nation's birth.  The celebrations were marked with parades, barbecues and fireworks with little reflection upon the dramas preceding July 4, 1776. Scant thought is given to the reason for the parties: the birth of our nation and announcement of its core principles in the Declaration of Independence.  Creating the Declaration of Independence sheds light on WHY there's a celebration.

On August 16th at Heartland, I'll be talking about Richard Henry Lee's trepidation as he knows when he proposes American Independence to the Second Continental Congress that he is literally risking beheading. There's also the back stories of  Adams and Jefferson at City Tavern as over a beer they begin crafting the Declaration of Independence and how Jefferson came to reluctantly draft the Declaration when few others, including Adams, thought that Jefferson's assignment was important. I'll provide a lawerly insight into a shortcut Jefferson used to craft a document of such immortality on such short notice.

The special skills of Jefferson will be on display as we talk about how he set forth in 55 words the American Creed, beginning with "We hold these truths to be self-evident..." While I hope you'll join us at Heartland, but if you're unable,  tune into the webcast which will allow you to send questions and participate.

While I'll be signing copies of Creating the Declaration of Independence at the event, the Heartland registration link provides you with an option to order a signed copy if you can't be with us.
