Mowrer will focus on fair and accessible elections, increased efficiency in Secretary of State’s office

DES MOINES, Iowa – Jim Mowrer has announced he will run for Iowa Secretary of State, focused on increasing efficiency in the Secretary of State’s office and ensuring fair and accessible elections.

“Iowans have a rich history of political engagement. That’s why it’s so discouraging that our public officials are spending their time and our tax dollars adding unnecessary barriers that make it harder for people to vote,” said Jim Mowrer. “After speaking with auditors, community leaders, and voters across the state, it’s clear that we need a leader in the Secretary of State’s office with a record of effectively managing taxpayer dollars and with a dedication to ensuring fair and accessible elections. That’s why I’m running for Iowa Secretary of State.”

Mowrer, a native of Boone, Iowa, joined the Iowa National Guard following the September 11th attacks. Quickly moving up the ranks, he was promoted to sergeant after just two years of service and deployed to Iraq in 2005 as an intelligence analyst. While deployed, he worked to coordinate his unit’s absentee voting process from Iraq, where he saw firsthand how difficult it is for some citizens to cast their ballots.

Then, in 2010, Mowrer was asked to serve as the special assistant to the undersecretary of the Army. Working at the Pentagon, he helped start and oversee the Army Office of Business Transformation – tasked with the goal of making the Army more effective, while saving tax dollars.

Mowrer’s announcement follows dramatic changes to Iowa voting laws in 2017, when new barriers to voting were created and early voting opportunities in the state were drastically reduced. Additionally, under Paul Pate’s watch, the Secretary of State’s office certified the 2016 Iowa election results with nearly 6,000 missing votes.

“Right now, we have a Secretary of State focused on making it as difficult and expensive as possible for Iowans to vote – that’s unacceptable,” added Mowrer.

Jim and his wife, Chelsey, live in Des Moines, with their two sons, Carter (9) and Jack (6). Jim works for a human services nonprofit organization and is an adjunct professor at Grandview University in Des Moines.

In a recent survey of likely voters, Mowrer leads current Secretary of State Paul Pate 38 to 33 percent.
