During Four-Day, 10-Stop Tour, Fred Will Visit Mental Health Facilities and Local Jails, and Join Roundtable Discussions In Every Corner of State
Fred Will Be Joined By County Sheriffs, Mental Health Professionals, and Community Leaders to Discuss Solutions To Iowa’s Growing Mental Health Crisis
Today, Fred Hubbell, Democratic candidate for governor of Iowa, will continue a four-day statewide mental health tour. Fred will be joined by county sheriffs, mental health professionals, and community leaders to hear about Iowa’s mental health crisis and discuss solutions to restore care and support to the mental health community. Fred’s 10-stop tour will span across every corner of Iowa, from Sioux City and Harlan, to Burlington and Dubuque. The tour follows the release of Fred’s new TV and first radio ad focused on mental health and highlighting his vision to restore and expand quality healthcare to all Iowans.
At each stop, Fred will discuss his vision to revitalize Iowa’s mental health care. According to a recent study by the Treatment Advocacy Center, Iowa ranks "dead last in the number of psychiatric treatment beds available per capita," and throughout Governor Kim Reynolds’ time in office, Iowa’s mental health system has seen facilities close, in addition to services reduced and denied due to Reynolds’ failed Medicaid privatization.
Amidst a lack of facilities and mental health care professionals, more and more of the burden of care is falling upon our public safety officials and our jails that aren’t equipped to properly treat those in need. As stated in the Gazette, Iowa sheriffs are now on the front lines of the mental health crisis, as “jails have become the mental health institutions” with no where else to send those who need a hospital bed, not a jail cell. According to law enforcement officials, as much as one third of inmates in Iowa jails do not belong there, and not only is it an inefficient use of their resources, but it can also exasperate the mental health problems of the individual.
While listening and learning from mental health stakeholders in every corner of the state, Fred will discuss how collectively we can turn the tide on the mental health crisis and restore care across Iowa. As governor, Fred will lead with his heart and work to restore access to high quality, affordable care and treatment that Iowans suffering from a mental illness deserve.
Throughout the tour, Fred will be joined by the former President of the National Sheriffs Association and current Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald.

About Fred:
A lifelong progressive and fifth-generation Iowan, Fred Hubbell is a proven leader with the experience to get results and get Iowa moving in the right direction. A leader who knows how to balance a budget, Fred holds vast experience in both the public and private sector, where he successfully ran several large companies like Younkers Department Chain and Equitable of Iowa. Additionally, Fred was twice called to public service, first, by then Governor Culver in 2007 to lead the Iowa Power Fund, helping Iowa invest and become a leader in renewable energy, and secondly, in 2009, to help clean up the Iowa Department of Economic Development following a disastrous film tax scandal. Throughout his career, Fred has also been a tireless progressive advocate. As the former chair of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Iowa, he fought to protect and expand a woman's right to quality health care. Serving on the Iowa College Foundation Board and Simpson College Board, Fred has worked to expand higher education opportunities to more Iowans. And with his service on the Mercy Hospital Medical Board and work with Broadlawns Medical Center, he has fought to ensure that those Iowans in need get the quality, affordable, and accessible health care they deserve. He currently resides in Des Moines, with his wife Charlotte, and has three children and three grandchildren.
