Hubbell Campaign Launches 'RedinkReynolds.com' Calling On Governor Reynolds To Responsibly Manage Iowa's Budget

Today, following Governor Kim Reynolds' misguided 'Condition of the State' advocating for new tax cuts, while her mismanagement has put Iowa $144 million in debt, the Hubbell campaign launched a new website 'RedInkReynolds.com' calling on Governor Reynolds to end her red-ink spending and pay off the debt this year. With wasteful corporate tax giveaways like the Apple Deal, 'Red-ink Reynolds' entire tenure in office has been marked by fiscal mismanagement she's trying to ignore while Iowan's suffer from a lack of vital services such as the collapse of our mental health system. Reynolds plans to kick the can down the road, pushing for tax cuts while making no plans to fully pay off her debt in 2018.

"As someone who has balanced many budgets throughout my career, Governor Reynolds' fiscally irresponsible actions are alarming and risks turning our state into Kansas," said Fred Hubbell. "The fact the Governor is pushing tax cuts despite the massive debt she just created, shows she puts politics and her re-election campaign before everyday Iowans. This state can't afford to lower taxes before fully paying off our debt.  I'm calling on Governor Reynolds and the GOP legislature to stop pushing tax cuts we can't afford until her debt is paid down and education and health care are fully funded. Her red-ink spending needs to end."

Recently, a poll showed the vast majority of Iowans support government funding for vital services over new tax cuts. Both K-12 and higher education have been severely under funded, most notably Iowa's regent schools have seen their budget slashed by $30 million forcing a potential 35% tuition hike over the next five years.

Meanwhile, health care has seen a constant stream of cuts to patient benefits and delayed and denied Medicaid payments to providers in the Reynolds' privatized system, despite costing taxpayers $185 million more than initially promised this coming year. Iowa's mental health system, ranked dead last in the nation for number of state psychiatric beds per capita, and remains grossly underfunded following unilateral closures of 2 of the 4 mental health institutes and an overall lack of adequate funding for the regional mental health system and any children's mental health system.
