Appearing in an April 29 Moeller Nights concert at Davenport's The Stardust, the acclaimed indie-rock artists of Rogue Wave will deliver, in its entirety, a live performance of the group's Asleep at Heaven's Gate in celebration of its 10th-anniversary reissue, the 2007 album having been deemed “an incredible pop-rock journey” by Chicago Now and, according to Variety, “a satisfying full-length that grows more pleasurable with each listen.”
Rogue Wave formed in 2002 when a newly unemployed Zach Rogue left his San Francisco home, visited friends in New York City, and returned to California with nearly a full album's worth of indie-pop compsitions. Rogue then quit his post in his previous group The Desoto Reds and finished the album, which was released on the singer/songwriter's own Responsive label as Out of the Shadow. As he was completing the record, Rogue decided to form a band in order to perform the material live, and enlisted drummer/keyboardist Pat Spurgeon, bassist Sonya Westcott, and guitarist Gram LeBron for 2003 concert sets. Impressed with their growing buzz, Sub Pop consequently signed Rogue Wave, and officially reissued Out of the Shadows in 2004.
The full-length Descended Like Vutures followed in late 2005, with songs from the album appearing on such television series as Weeds, Friday Night Lights, and Heroes, and the band maintained a hectic touring schedule until 2006, when they were forced to take time off as drummer Pat Spurgeon underwent a kidney transplant and other bandmembers dealt with death (LeBron's father) and birth (Rogue's new daughter). After a professional switch to the Brushfire imprint, Rogue Wave released its third album Asleep at Heaven's Gate in the fall of 2007, and has subsequently followed it with 2010's Permalight, 2013's Nightingale Floors, 2016's Delusions of Grand Fur, and last year's Cover Me, the latter covering iconic '80s tunes such as The Romantics' “Talking in Your Sleep” and Kim Carnes' “Bette Davis Eyes.”
Its lineup currently composed of Rogue, Spurgeon, Masanori Christianson, and Jon Monahan, Rogue Wave performs the April 29 Asleep at Heaven's Gate concert with special-guest openers starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $13, and more information on the night is available by visiting MoellerNights.com.
