AMES, IOWA (September 25, 2019) — Adaptive Sports Iowa (ASI) is proud to offer a first-of-its-kind event gathering organizations and individuals from around Iowa for a day of networking, round-table discussions, and guest speakers. The purpose of the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Summit is to provide a venue for sharing, planning, and developing strategies to further engage Iowans with disabilities. The Summit will be held on Thursday, September 26, 9AM-3PM, at Decades Event Center in West Des Moines.

Adaptive Sports Iowa, a program of the Iowa Sports Foundation, strives to provide leadership in the planning, promotion, education, and organization of sports and recreational activities for Iowans with physical and vision disabilities. Annually, ASI offers adaptive forms of airgun, basketball, baseball, goalball, cycling, track and field, skiing, and sled hockey.

"This summit aims to raise awareness, identify barriers, and establish relationships for the growth of new opportunities within sports and recreation," said Hannah Lundeen, Adaptive Sports Iowa Coordinator. "We are excited for the possibilities this summit will provide those attending, as well as those who will benefit from the work that takes place."

Jessica Heims, a Paralympic athlete in the sport of Track and Field, will serve as the keynote speaker during the summit. Jessica will share her story of living with a disability, the doors opened through adaptive opportunities, and her experiences competing on the collegiate, national, and international stage.

Although registration is closed for the summit, Adaptive Sports Iowa welcomes contact from organizations or individuals interested in learning more about the outcomes, or in seek of opportunities to get involved.
