“KPop Demon Hunters” After-Hours Party at the LeClaire Community Library -- January 30.
Friday, January 30, 5 p.m.
LeClaire Community Library, 323 Wisconsin Street, LeClaire IA
For one night only, on January 30, the LeClaire Community Library will be locking its doors and turning down the lights for face painting, snacks, crafts, a sing-along, and more in the KPop Demon Hunters After-Hours Party, with area youths invited to join Huntrix or the Saja Boys in hunting down demons hiding in the library – and in the dark.
A 2025 animated musical fantasy directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters follows the K-pop girl group Huntrix, who lead double lives as monster assassins, as they face off against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons. The film originated from Kang's desire to create a story inspired by her Korean heritage, drawing on elements of mythology, demonology, and K-pop to craft a visually distinct and culturally rooted cinematic work. KPop Demon Hunters was reported to be in production at Sony Pictures Animation by March of 2021, with the full creative team attached, and was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks. It was visually influenced by concert lighting, editorial photography, and music videos, and drew inspiration from anime and Korean dramas. The soundtrack features original songs by several musicians, as well as a score composed by Marcelo Zarvos.
KPop Demon Hunters began streaming on Netflix on June 20, 2025, while a sing-along version of the film received limited theatrical releases on August 23 and 24, plus October 31 through November 2. The film received praise for its animation, visual style, voice acting, writing, and music, and became the most-watched original title in Netflix history with more than 500 million views. Its sing-along theatrical release was the all-time-widest by number of theaters for a Netflix film, and the first to top the box office in the United States. KPop Demon Hunters has garnered numerous accolades, including winning Best Animated Feature at the 31st Critics' Choice Awards and 83rd Golden Globe Awards, along with being featured in Time magazine as its 2025 Breakthrough of the Year.
The film's soundtrack achieved similar success, becoming the first in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to feature four of its songs in the top 10, which include "Golden," "Your Idol," "Soda Pop," and "How It's Done." It's the first film soundtrack since 1995's Waiting to Exhale to feature at least three of its songs in the top 10, and "Golden," the album's second single, eventually reached number one on the Billboard Global 200, standing as the longest-lasting number-one song by a fictional act on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. A KPop Demon Hunters sequel is planned to be released in 2029.
The KPop Demon Hunters After-Hours Party takes place at the LeClaire Community Library from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on January 30, admission is free (though advance registration is required), and more information is available by calling (563)289-6007 and visiting LeClaireIowa.gov/153/Library.
