With each piece chosen by the institutions’ art professors to showcase campus talent and creativity, the Figge Art Museum's latest installment of the College Invitational will be on display in the Davenport venue from october 10 through January 17, the artwork from gifted students attending nine area colleges and universities on view in the museum's Mary Waterman Gildehaus Community Gallery.
The featured artworks for the latest College Invitational have been chosen by the art professors at each school to celebrate and highlight campus art programs across the region. with the collected works boasting a variety of mediums including digital art, printmaking, painting, photography, and ceramics. Participating institutions include Augustana College, Black Hawk College, Clarke University, Clinton Community College, Knox College, Monmouth College, Scott Community College, St. Ambrose University, and Western Illinois University. After the entries have gone through the approval process and are exhibited, the artworks are then juried, and with recognition given for First, Second, and Third Place, the Judge’s Choice Award, the Honorable Mention, and a People’s Choice Award.
This year’s exhibition is sponsored by the Brand Boeshaar Foundation Fund and the Hubbell Waterman Foundation, and the public is invited to attend the College Invitational Celebration & Awards Night on October 15. Students and faculty from the nine academic institutions, along with their Figge friends and community, will celebrate the student work chosen to represent their colleges and universities, and the public is invited to join the festivities for viewing, meeting the student artists, and celebrating their achievements while awards are bestowed.
The Figge Art Museum is dedicated to bringing art and people together. Located on the Mississippi River in downtown Davenport, the Figge is the premier art exhibition and education facility between Chicago and Des Moines. Its landmark glass building, designed by British architect David Chipperfield, is home to one of the Midwest’s finest art collections and presents world-class exhibitions, art classes, lectures, and special events that attract visitors of all ages.
The College Invitational Celebration & Awards Night will begin at 6 p.m. on October 15, admission is free, and the Figge bar and cafe will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. (cards only). The College Invitational exhibit itself will be on display in the Davenport venue's Mary Waterman Gildehaus Community Gallery from October 10 through January 17, with regular museum hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays (10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays) and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
