Andrew Garfield in “Tick … Tick … Boom!" at the Figge Art Museum -- November 5.

Thursday, November 5, 6 p.m.

Figge Art Museum, 225 West Second Street, Davenport IA

Lauded by Entertainment Weekly as a "totem for the thrills and trials of making art, with all the sacrifices and empathy it requires," the Oscar-nominated musical Tick ... Tick ... Boom! enjoys a November 5 screening at Davenport's Figge Art Museum, this showcase for the musicianship of Rent creator Jonathan Larson and star Andrew Garfield praised by Rotten Tomatoes' critical consensus as "an impressive feat for debuting director Lin-Manuel Miranda."

In Tick ... Tick ... Boom!, which opens in 1990, Garfield's Jon is a young theatre composer currently waiting tables at a New York City diner while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he's to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amid an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question that everyone must: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

Written by Steven Levenson, who also serves as an executive producer, Tick ... Tick ... Boom! is based on Jonathan Larson's semi-autobiographical stage musical of the same name, and co-stars Robin de Jesús, Alexandra Shipp, Joshua Henry, Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens. The movie had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 10, 2021, and began a limited theatrical release two days later, before streaming on Netflix on November 19. The film received positive reviews for Garfield's performance, the editing, and Miranda's direction. It was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, Best Picture at the 27th Critics' Choice Awards, as well as Best Film Editing at the 94th Academy Awards. For his performance, Garfield won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and was nominated as Best Actor for the Academy Award, Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor.

In 2023, Tick ... Tick ... Boom! ranked number 38 on Time Out's list of "The 40 Best Musical Movies of All Time," It also ranked number 15 on Screen Rant's list of "The 35 Best Musicals of All Time," which Parade ranked Miranda's adaptation at number 36 on its list of the "67 Best Movie Musicals of All Time," calling it the "most invigorating snapshot of the all-consuming struggle of a creative since Brad Bird's layered masterpiece Ratatouille.”

Tick … Tick … Boom! will be screened in Davenport's John Deere Auditorium on November 5, the movie being shown in the Free Film at the Figge series currently presenting a selection of distinguished, award-winning films that depict the essential roles that persistence and perseverance play in our everyday lives. The Figge Bar will be open at 5 p.m. (cards only) before the film's 6 p.m. screening, and more information on the evening is available by calling (563)326-7804 and visiting FiggeArtMuseum.org.
