With ChicagoBlues.live raving that "his playing stands apart as a uniquely creative force of its own," Brother John Kattke performs a special October 21 concert at Rock Island's Hauberg Civic Center Mansion, the exhilarating show co-presented by the Mississippi Valley Blues Society.
A renowned Chicago blues musician, Kattke has been widely celebrated for his guitar, keyboard, and vocal performances, as well as decades of collaborations with legendary artists. His musical journey began at an early age, with piano lessons at six, violin at nine, and guitar at 14. His passion for the blues was sparked after hearing the legendary Albert King. A fixture at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago for more than 30 years, Kattke has performed on both guitar and keyboards alongside some of music’s biggest names, including Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton, Steve Miller, and the Black Crowes. He also spent three years leading the Otis Rush Band.
Some of the industry's most respected artists have praised his musicianship. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin once complimented his guitar playing, declaring, “You play a mean guitar!” after watching him perform with Otis Rush. Jazz guitar legend George Benson described him as “fearless” after hearing him play at a jam session at Buddy Guy’s Legends. Blending traditional blues influences with remarkable versatility on both piano and guitar, Brother John brings creativity, technical skill, and powerful, full-throated vocals to every performance.
Beyond the stage, Kattke teaches music professionally and continues to contribute to Chicago’s blues scene through live performances, recordings, and mentoring younger musicians. His dedication to the craft has made him an important part of the city's rich blues tradition, both as a solo artist and as a collaborator with legendary performers. With decades of experience and an enduring passion for the music, Brother John Kattke remains a highly respected figure in Chicago's vibrant blues community. He will be accompanied by Nick Fane and Marty Binder.
