Quad City Arts partners with the Illinois Arts Council inviting Illinois High Schools to participate in a free national program- Poetry Out Loud created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation

Poetry Out Loud has served as an inspiration for hundreds of thousands of students. Now entering its 10th year of national competition, POL has helped students to develop skills in public speaking, self-confidence, and poise while interpreting great poetry through memorization and performance.

POL may be implemented in the classroom or as an after school program in as little as 2 to 3 weeks and does not require full class periods. Students are only required to memorize and recite 2 poems at the school and regional level. This program also meets most of the NCTE English Language Arts Standards and Illinois English Language Arts Standards.

State Awards: Each winner at the state level will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip (with an adult chaperone) to Washington, DC, to compete at the National Finals. The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. One runner-up in each state will receive $100; his or her school will receive $200 for the purchase of poetry books. National Awards: A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be given at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, including a $20,000 award for the National Champion.

Why: Razzle, Dazzle!  From dance to art, students will show off their creative side at this year's PTA Reflections Open House and Award Ceremony.  Reflections is a nationwide PTA initiative and contest to encourage students' creative expression.  Students submitted entries in six categories in October:  dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, photography and visual arts.  Since then, local judges have been looking at their work.  Thursday, the students will perform and find out who advances to state.  It's a great chance to celebrate the arts!!!

TEACHING THE 'BRAD PITT' OF THE FUTURE

When: Saturday, January 10th all day - Kids perform at 1:00; High Schoolers perform at 3:30.

Where: Pleasant Valley High School

Why: A Star will be born this Saturday at PVHS!  The Drama Club is having an all-day Children's workshop.  High School thespians will teach the little ones how to act, dance, sing, stage fight and more!  It all culminates in what could be the first performance for the "next big thing" (a showcase at 1:00pm and don't you want video and pictures of Brad Pitt's first performance... this is your chance at that chance!)   After the showcase, the High Schoolers will perform a musical version of "Snow White."  The play's not the only thing; students learn how to work as a team, mentor younger students, and try something new!

Rock Island, IL: When it comes to toddlers ages three and under, play and learning go hand in hand. To help parents and caregivers support early learning pre-reading skills, the Rock Island Public Library will offer a new monthly play group at its 30/31 Branch.

Starting Jan. 8, the Play and Grow group will meet at 10:30 am on the second Thursday of each month within the bookstore at the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street. The program uses Every Child Ready to Read pre-reading skills to help toddlers ages three and under with a parent or caregiver talk, sing, play, write, and read their way to early literacy.

Play and Grow meets at 10:30 am on Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 12, April 9 and May 14, and offers play, stories and songs designed to support the early learning needs of babies and young toddlers. Additional activities include sharing strategies with parents and caregivers for healthy child development and early learning, and occasional presentations from local professionals on resources for parents of young children
