Singer-guitarist Anthony Gomes lives by that credo of truth as an artist, constantly challenging himself to expand his explorations of heart and sound. The release of his latest album Up 2 Zero represents a full-circle return to his love of high energy, guitar-driven blues rock. The new collection of songs combines straightahead power blues compositions with tracks that incorporate soul-injected melodic moments.

Gomes was named BluesWax Magazine's "Artist of the Year," which elevated him to the top of the blues field.   Music Is the Medicine, released in 2006, peaked at number four on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. Gomes' endless touring kept him atop the blues field as he continued to be nominated for BluesWax Artist of the Year awards for several years in a row. 2008?s LIVE is Gomes' greatest commercial success to date, reaching number one on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart.

As simple as it sounds, you have to follow your heart and I had to get back to where I started. For me, it's the blues. I can always try different things, but I always find myself going back to where the music started."

Nova Singers Presents: A Nova Christmas

Nova Singers, under the direction of Dr. Laura Lane, presents two performances of A Nova Christmas: Friday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, IA, and Saturday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Galesburg.

Nova Singers' most popular concert of the year is fast approaching! Get your friends and family into the Christmas spirit with a program featuring Christmas songs of all kinds, including Kirby Shaw's arrangement of Silver Bells and Irving Berlin's timeless White Christmas. Victoria's Ne Timeas Maria and Muehleisen's A solis ortus cardine are sure to take your breath away. We also celebrate local talent, featuring Galesburg composer Daniel Godsil's newly published Choral Meditation on "The Holly and the Ivy" and pianist Megan Clewell on a tango from Puerto Rico and a delightful arrangement of Shepherd's Shake Off Their Drowsy Sleep.  And of course, it wouldn't be A Nova Christmas without an audience sing-along!

Nova Singers will be joined by youth choirs for both concerts. On Friday the 14th in Davenport at St. Paul Lutheran Church, the guest choir is the Sudlow Select Choir, under the direction of Kim Knoche.  On Saturday the 15th in Galesburg at First Lutheran Church, Nova will be joined by the Galesburg Singing Streaks, directed by Pier Debes.  Each choir will perform their own set of music before combining with the Nova Singers for three beloved Christmas carols.

Artistic Director Laura Lane says that the Christmas concert is one of her personal favorites. "It's true! Music has always been an important part of the holiday season for me. Every year, I love finding new Christmas carols that we've never done before that I think are perfect for Nova Singers. And this year I have found so many that are uniquely beautiful! I adore the mystical, deep motets from the Renaissance by Hassler and Victoria, but I'm also  thrilled with the A solis ortus?written a year ago, I believe this will be only its second performance ever! Based on chant, it's haunting and full of rich, lush harmonies and just absolutely gorgeous. I'm also really excited about finally singing Silver Bells and White Christmas with Nova Singers: two of my dad's favorite carols."

Nova Singers, a professional vocal ensemble under the direction of Dr. Laura Lane, hopes to share our musical holiday spirit with you.  Nova Singers is known for bringing a wide variety of choral music to its audiences, and for the beauty and charm the singers impart to their music.  Dr. Lane has been serving the greater Galesburg and Quad-Cities communities since 1986, bringing her passion for music and expressive singing to audiences and singers alike.

ABOUT JIM McDONOUGH

After stints as a high school band director, cruise ship entertainer and air-traffic controller, Monticello native, Jim McDonough, began selling his distinctive brand of soothing piano music in gift shops in eastern Iowa. The road to success, though, has been paved with detours. In eighth grade, an accident nearly ended his musical career. Sue Long to Perform in the College Choir November 29

COLUMBIA, TN (11/19/2012)(readMedia)-- Sue Long of Davenport, IA is slated to perform in the Columbia State College Choir concert scheduled for November 29 in the Ledbetter Auditorium on the main campus of the College in Columbia. The concert will begin at 1pm. Long is majoring in Social Work.

The College Choir boasts 23 vocalists who will perform a mixture of patriotic and holiday favorites during the concert. The College Choir is directed by Assistant Professor of Music, Emily Gaskill. The concert is open to the public.

DAVENPORT - Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on children's author Chris Van Allsburg's modern holiday classic of the same name, The Polar Express revolves around Billy (Hayden McFarland), who longs to believe in Santa Claus but finds it quite difficult to do so, what with his family's dogged insistence that all of it, from the North Pole, to the elves, to the man himself, is all just a myth. This all changes, however, on Christmas Eve, when a mysterious train visits Billy in the middle of the night, promising to take him and a group of other lucky children to the North Pole for a visit with Santa. The train's conductor (Tom Hanks) along with the other passengers help turn Billy's crisis in faith into a journey of self-discovery.

DAVENPORT - He's mean, he's green, and he's doesn't like the Yuletide season one bit -- Jim Carrey stars in this live-action adaptation of the classic children's story by Dr. Seuss (aka Theodore Geisel). High atop Mt. Crumpet, the Grinch (Carrey) observes the residents of Whoville joyously preparing to celebrate Christmas. The Grinch was born in Whoville years ago, but was shunned due to his scary appearance, and his unrequited love for Martha May Whovier has turned him bitter; the good cheer of the Whos has been a thorn in his side ever since. Finally the Grinch decides he's had enough of all this happiness, and with the wary aid of his dog Max, the Grinch conspires to steal Christmas from Whoville, making off with their presents, holiday decorations, Christmas trees, and everything else used to enjoy the holiday.

DAVENPORT - Chuck Jones' animated version of the classic Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas originally aired on television in 1966 and has since become a holiday family favorite. Voiced by Boris Karloff who also narrates, the Grinch lives on top of a hill overlooking Whoville with his dog, Max. Each year at Christmas time, the Grinch's hatred grows stronger toward those insufferably cheerful Whos down in Whoville. Content to exchange presents, eat large banquets, and sing songs in the town square, the Whos live in a blissful ignorance of the Grinch's contempt. One year, he gets the idea to stop Christmas from coming by dressing up as Santa Claus. He cobbles together an outfit and makes his dog drag him around on a sleigh while sneaking into the Whos' homes and stealing their presents, food, and decorations. After he has stolen every last thing, the Whos wake up on Christmas morning to sing in the town square, causing the Grinch to question the basis of his nefarious plan. Thurl Ravenscroft the voice of kid cereal mascot Tony the Tiger provides the vocals for the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." This story was remade into a live-action movie in 2000 by director Ron Howard starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch.

Concert at the German American Heritage Center

Davenport IA- The German American Heritage Center is hosting its annual Christmas Concert with the Davenport Zither Ensemble on Sunday, December 2nd at 2pm. Bee Sharp/ Zither in "C" concert will feature special guests the Bee Sharp Vocal Ensemble, men's choir group from St. Ambrose University.  Join us as we ring in the season with the soothing sounds of the zither!

Led Zeppelin on the GIANT Screen

DAVENPORT -On December 10, 2007,  Led Zeppelin took the stage at London's O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band's signature blues-infused rock 'n' roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks "Whole Lotta Love," "Rock And Roll," "Kashmir," and "Stairway To Heaven."

Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band's first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery.

Led Zeppelin has also been selected as one of the recipients of the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors. The band is set to receive the Honors at the annual gala on December 2 in Washington, DC.
