Mallards Weekend Results

Mallards Fall to Rush in Overtime on Friday night

MOLINE, Ill. (January 16, 2015) - Cody Ferriero scored his second goal of the game at 2:06 of overtime to give the Rapid City Rush (15-20-2) a 4-3 win over the host Quad City Mallards (17-13-6) Friday night.  The Mallards, who sit in fourth place in the ECHL's Central Division, did earn one point for the sudden death defeat.

Ferriero snapped off the game winner from the slot after the Rush's Dallas Erhardt had forced overtime by scoring the tying power play goal from the left point with just 2:19 left in regulation.

It was the Mallards who had battled from behind earlier in the third period.  Mario Lamoureux swept home his second goal of the game from the high slot to even the score at two at 1:02 of the third.  Antti Pusa gave the Mallards a 3-2 lead from close range at the 9:13 mark of the final frame.

The Rush's Patrick Cullen and Ferriero scored one minute and 21 seconds apart to turn the game around in the second period.  With those two goals Rapid City turned a 1-0 Mallard lead into a 2-1 Rush advantage.  Cullen buried a rebound at 7:03 of the second; at 8:24 Ferriero put the Rush on top while toppling in the slot.

Lamoureux's shorthanded wraparound opened the scoring at 12:32 of the first period.

Mallards Stop Rush 3-1 on Sunday, January 18

MOLINE, Ill. (January 18, 2015) - Matt Duffy broke a 1-1 tie at 1:58 of the third period and the host Quad City Mallards (17-13-6) went on to defeat the Rapid City Rush (16-20-2) 3-1 Sunday.  With the win the Mallards moved into a tie for second place in the ECHL's Central Division.

Duffy's one timer from the top of the right wing circle gave the Mallards their second lead of the night.  Joe Perry's empty net goal clinched the victory with just one second left.

The Mallards had first moved in front when Justin Fox pounced on a Rapid City turnover in the slot to open the scoring at 3:47 of the first period.

The Rush's Dan Barczuk tied the game at one from close range at 10:22 of the second period.

The Mallards return to action on the road Saturday night against the Missouri Mavericks.  The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night, January 28 at 7:05 p.m. against the Wichita Thunder.  Fans can get four tickets to Mallards Wednesday night home games for just $20.  After each Wednesday night home tilt, fans can join the Mallards at T.G.I. Friday's in Moline for a postgame party.

Promotion-Packed Weekend Begins Friday Night

MOLINE, Ill. (January 14, 2015) - Fans who attend the Quad City Mallards' home game Sunday at 4:05 p.m. against the Rapid City Rush dressed as superheroes will receive free tickets to that contest as the Mallards cap off a promotion-packed weekend with Superhero Sunday.

The Mallards have teamed with Heroes Inc. for Superhero Sunday.  Fans of any age who get in touch with their inner superpowers and arrive in superhero guise Sunday can get their seats for free at the iWireless Center box office. In addition, the volunteer superheroes from Heroes Inc. will be on hand to meet fans during Sunday's game.  More information on Heroes Inc. can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/drivenheroes/.

The celebration of costumed crime fighters is just one part of a fun-filled weekend for the Mallards.  Sunday is also Kids Day: tickets to Sunday's game are just $5 for (non-superhero) children 12 and under.  After the game fans can join the Mallards on the ice for a postgame skate.

The Mallards will kick off the weekend when they take on the Rush Friday evening at 7:05 p.m.  Friday also brings the return of $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X and MetroLINK.  Fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs and beers from iWireless Center concession stands during all Friday home games.  97X will follow in the spirit of the evening by presenting hot dog-themed intermission entertainment.

The Mallards have partnered with Metro to provide transit service between Augustana College and downtown Moline during all Friday home games.  Students can catch the Route 10 on campus via 7th Avenue to and from the games, with the Route 10 dropping students off near campus or at the District after games.  Students can then hop on the Route 53 from the District back to Augustana until 3 a.m.  As part of Metro's unlimited ride program, Augustana riders can use their Augustana ID as their fare.  Fans can visit www.gogreenmetro.com or www.facebook.com/53and59 for more information.

R.I.A. LITTLE SAVER PROGRAM, MALLARDS KIDS CLUB ENTER SECOND YEAR

MOLINE, Ill. (January 13, 2015) - R.I.A. Federal Credit Union has entered the second year of its title sponsorship of the Quad City Mallards' Kids Club and Little Saver program, the Mallards announced today.

R.I.A. has donated better than $1,000 to the savings accounts of young Mallards fans through the Little Saver program.  The R.I.A. Federal Credit Union Mallards Kids Club is presented by KARS- Kids Are Rewarded for Saving.  Young fans who open a savings account at R.I.A. Federal Credit Union can join the Kids Club free of charge.  In addition, for each Mallards home game, one fan age 12 or under is chosen at random to be the Mallards' "Little Saver".  The Little Saver is introduced at the start of the game with the Mallards' starting goaltender and R.I.A. Federal Credit Union opens a savings account for the Little Saver and contributes one dollar to that account for each save made by the Mallards' goaltender in that game.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Jan. 12, 2015) - The Quad Cities River Bandits have often found the spotlight with the recent recognition of two Midwest League championships in the last four seasons, attendance records, national awards for the ballpark and for the team's unique and creative promotions, and a considerable number of honors for community involvement and entertainment. Now fans can celebrate and support the team's unique name, which is among 32 finalists in a Sporting News online vote to decide the best team name in Minor League Baseball.
"Fans in the Quad Cities community chose the River Bandits name for their team, and their support of the franchise has made it among the most recognizable in minor league baseball," said team owner Dave Heller. "This contest gives our fans the chance to show what the name River Bandits means - affordable, family-friendly fun and entertainment, outstanding hospitality, and the chance to create lasting memories at the friendliest ballpark in America!"
The contest pairs team names against one another in head-to-head voting, with the winners advancing to another head-to-head round. The River Bandits will compete with the Erie Seawolves in the first round, which runs from 10 a.m. Central Standard Time on Monday, Jan. 12, to 10 a.m. Central Standard Time on Wednesday, Jan. 14. In the last two years, online fan votes have led to Modern Woodmen Park, the River Bandits' home stadium, being named the Best Minor League Ballpark by 10Best.com and USA TODAY, and the River Bandits' home cap being named the best cap in Class-A baseball. In addition, the team has won an annual award four of the last seven seasons for Best Ballpark Improvement from Ballpark Digest.

4 Misconceptions That Won't Help When You Hit the Slopes This Season

Common Errors to Avoid from Sought-after Instructor & Keynote Speaker

As the season gets underway and skiers of all levels journey to the snow capped mountains, chances are that a great many of them will do some things that won't help their cause, says world-class ski instructor Chalky White.

"You can boil down skiing to a few basic principles, but like any sport, there are many finer details that matter, and with an activity like skiing, the details can mean the difference between a safe ski trip and a hazardous one," Chalky says.

"Skiing is a truly wonderful sport; it changed my life! I hate to think that there are beginners who may be steered away from it due to avoidable mistakes. And, there are those who've become decent skiers - they love the sport and they continue skiing each season - but they're held back by questionable technique and inaccurate practice."

Due to the popularity of his Amazon, in-category, No.1 bestselling how-to book, "The 7 Secrets of Skiing," Chalky was able to craft a new program for business professionals and celebrities called Ski the World with Chalky White, (www.the7secretsofskiing.com).

Chalky reviews four common mistakes skiers make on snow-capped slopes.

•  "I'm too old to be a great skier, so I'll just wing it." Some people are raised on the slopes, carving up the snow at age 6 and entering competitions at age 8. Most folks, however, have average natural ability and aren't raised on skis. But, as I was they can, if accurately trained, become very competent skiers.

If you're completely new to skiing, take the time to learn some basics - preferably with a qualified instructor. The most important fundamental to learn is balance, as applied to skiing; all sports rely on balance to some extent, and for skiing it all starts there!

•  "I can be great if only I can overcome my fear." Indeed, hurling one's body down what they perceive to be a steep slope of slippery snow takes courage. It makes sense to have butterflies at the top of a slope, but overcoming nerves alone won't make you great.

Some skiers, even a few new to the sport, have little fear when skiing - but that's often because they've practiced and have undergone sound training. The more adept you become as a skier, the more fear-based emotion is pushed to the "back-burner" and is, as practice continues, largely replaced by new-found confidence and more fun.

•  "I'm beyond the basics." Ninety-five percent of skiers, including some professionals, do not fully appreciate and utilize the power of balance - at least not consciously. Many simply believe they are fully balanced, but this is often delusional and maybe arrogant thinking. The best advice is to be a constant student, which means consistent vigilance toward one's balance.

A great skier is one who can consistently recover following balance losses. You may be frustrated that you lost balance at all. However, the ability to recover with ease is a sign that you are well-balanced.

•  "I don't want to pre-release from my ski bindings; my gear seems okay." Just as it is silly to think that gear alone will make you a good skier, so too is the idea that gear doesn't have specific requirements. Most vitally, you'll want to make sure ski bindings - a device that connects a ski boot to a ski - adhere to the right D.I.N. (German for "Deutsche Institut Fuer Normung") standard. If your bindings are accurately set to suit your age, ability and weight, and if you are skiing with proper technique, you will probably not pre-release from them. But if you make a mistake serious enough to merit a release from attachment to your skis before falling, then chances of injury are dramatically decreased. Some skiers tamper with these professional standards to prevent release, which can be extremely dangerous.

Other important facets include boots - the most important gear item for technique - and ski poles, which should be the correct length.

I have heard far too many disturbing stories due to the inaccurate setting of the binding alone. Too many of my friends, and the general skiing fraternity, have experienced broken legs. Don't be one of many skiers, experts included, who neglect the binding setting. Get your skis' bindings regularly checked by a professional, and don't tamper with them!

MILNER NAMED ECHL ALL-STAR ALTERNATE

MOLINE, Ill. (January 8, 2015) - Quad City Mallards goaltender Parker Milner has been named an alternate for the 2015 ECHL All-Star Classic, the Mallards announced today in conjunction with the ECHL.

Milner, 24, will play in the January 21 All-Star Game in Orlando if one of the three goaltenders selected to compete for the ECHL All-Stars- Ontario's Joe Cannata, Greenville's Jeff Malcolm and Idaho's Olivier Roy- against the host Orlando Solar Bears is unavailable.

Milner earlier today signed a professional tryout agreement with the AHL's Iowa Wild for the fifth time this season.  The 6' 1", 197-pound Pittsburgh native ranks fourth in the ECHL in save percentage (.920) and fifth in goals against average (2.39) and has gone 9-6-2 in 17 games with the Mallards this year.  Milner last night made 37 saves while backstopping the Mallards to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Wichita Thunder.

"We knew when we signed Parker this summer that he was a quality goaltender so we were very happy to get him," said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski.  "Since he's joined us he's shown just how good he really is so we're very proud of him for earning this recognition."

Milner last season went 4-2-0 and turned in a 2.95 goals against average and a .904 save percentage in eight AHL games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  Milner spent the bulk of last year with the ECHL's Stockton Thunder, for whom he posted a 2.84 goals against average, a .907 save percentage and two shutouts while going 9-14-2 in 25 games.

Milner's is the seventh AHL call-up for a Mallard this season.  Milner will join defenseman Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel, who was called up from the Mallards last month, when he arrives in Des Moines.

Milner turned professional last season after winning two national championships in four years at Boston College.  Milner went 64-20-5 while turning in a 2.23 goals against average, a .919 save percentage and six shutouts in 93 games over the course of his standout collegiate career.

Milner helped Boston College to the NCAA title as a freshman in 2010 and again as a junior in 2012.  He acted a backup during BC's run to the 2010 championship before taking a leading role in the 2012 triumph.  Then a junior, Milner was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 NCAA tournament and also earned NCAA Frozen Four All-Tournament honors after going 4-0 with a 0.50 goals against average, a .982 save percentage and two shutouts during the tournament.  Milner's goals against average was tied for the best in tournament history while his save percentage was the highest since the tournament expanded beyond four teams in 1972.  He capped off his superb tournament effort by making 27 saves in BC's 4-1 victory over Ferris State in the national championship game.  The NCAA title was the crowning achievement of a season that also saw Milner and his teammates win the Hockey East regular season and tournament titles as well as the Beanpot and Icebreaker tournaments.

Over the 2011-12 campaign as a whole, Milner went 29-5-0 while registering a 1.66 goals against average, a .911 save percentage and three shutouts in 34 games.  His .853 winning percentage was the best in the nation.  He completed his college career in 2012-13 by playing in all but one of the Eagles' 38 games, going 22-11-4 and recording a 2.66 goals against average, a .911 save percentage and two shutouts.

During Milner's time in Chestnut Hill, BC not only claimed a pair of NCAA crowns but also secured three Hockey East postseason titles along with two conference regular season championships, made four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and won four straight Beanpots.

Before putting on the maroon and gold, Milner spent one season in the junior ranks with the United States Hockey League's Waterloo Black Hawks and one in prep school hockey at Avon Old Farms.

MALLARDS OVERCOME WICHITA IN O.T.

MOLINE, Ill. (January 7, 2015) - Mario Lamoureux scored on the power play at 1:53 of overtime and the host Quad City Mallards (17-12-5) recovered after surrendering a 3-0 third period lead to defeat the Wichita Thunder (16-11-6) 4-3 Wednesday night and break a tie with the Thunder for second place in the ECHL's Central Division.

Lamoureux- who also had an assist- ended the contest with a one timer from the right wing circle.

The Thunder forced overtime by erasing a three-goal deficit in just two minutes and 29 seconds late in the third period.  R. G. Flath buried a rebound to trigger the Wichita rally at 13:18 of the third.  Todd Hosmer cut the gap to one in a goalmouth scramble at 14:50.  A mere 57 seconds later Ian Duval tied the score from the left wing circle.

The Mallards built their three goal cushion over the opening 40 minutes.  Justin Fox scored twice in the first period.  Fox buried Antti Pusa's goalmouth feed 3:27 into the game and then rifled the puck in under the crossbar from the left wing circle with just 30 seconds left in the period.  Todd Fiddler jammed in the third Mallard goal at 18:07 of the second period.
