Bettendorf Rotary's Run with Carl's 17th Year Help Us Reach 1,700 Runners

BETTENDORF, IA - The Bettendorf Rotary and the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund have set Labor Day, Monday, September 5 as the date for the seventeenth annual Run with Carl Presented by Trinity Iowa Health Systems. The 5K run/walk and 1/2 and 1-mile fun runs for children 12 and under start and finish at the Bettendorf Life Center (2222 Middle Rd., Bettendorf) with an Awards Ceremony to follow at approximately 9:30 a.m. The course remains the same as in previous years. Entry fees are $20 for the 5K for no t-shirt and $25 for the 5K with a t-shirt. The youth entry fee for the ½ and 1-mile fun run is $10.

Runners in the 2010 Run with Carl attracted 1,300 runners and raised funds to support scholarships for local Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley graduates. This year, we hope to knock that number out of the park by registering 1,700 runners for the 17th year or the race. Participants may register online only at www.runwithcarl.com.

Carl Schillig was 15 years old when he was killed in a car-pedestrian accident in 1994. Carl was active in a variety of community, school and church activities. In commemoration of his life, the Run With Carl Walk/Run attracts participants to the challenging, but scenic, course following city streets, neighborhoods and the Bettendorf Recreation Path.

About the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund, Inc.: The Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund was established in 1995 by surviving members of Carl Shillig, who was killed at the age of 15 in a car-pedestrian accident. The fund provides a $4000 college scholarship to graduates of Pleasant Valley High School - which Carl attended - and Bettendorf High School graduates. With Carl's philanthropy as its inspiration, the nonprofit also distributes proceeds from the run to organizations in which Carl was active, including Bettendorf/Pleasant Valley Acquatics, Cornbelt Running Club, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

ADAPTIVE SPORTS EXPO PROVIDES OUTLET FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Davenport Parks and Recreation and the QCA Adaptive Sports Association will hold an Adaptive Sports Expo on Saturday, May 7 from 6 - 8pm at the Life Fitness Center, 2222 Middle Road, Bettendorf. The Public is invited to attend the expo, which will highlight the many ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events. Prior experience is not required to participate in the Expo.

The Expo will feature activities such as water-skiing, kayaking, sled hockey, aquatics, wheelchair basketball, tandem biking, tennis and seated volleyball. Demonstrations by professionally trained facilitators and athletes with disabilities will also take place. There will
also be informational exhibits and vendors.

Davenport Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of activities for people with disabilities under its Adaptive and Inclusive Programs. Standing Tee Times are available on Saturdays and Sundays between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. A list of these open tee times are available on www.golfdavenport.com. Call your favorite course for additional details.
  • A minimum of 40 tee times are held open for the general public for the entire 2011 golf season, for both Saturday and Sunday Mornings. These tee times are available for reservation 3 days in advance. A list of open public times is available on www.golfdavenport.com.
  • Duck Creek Golf Course is undergoing a stream-bank restoration project on Duck Creek waterway near the Kimberly Road Bridge. This project is being completed by the Public Works, Natural Resources Division.
  • Davenport Golf Courses will be honoring our area Military and Veterans by complimenting their green fees during Military Appreciation Week, May 13-22.

DAVENPORT HOLDS LOTTERY FOR WEEKEND STANDING TEE TIMES

A lottery will be held Wednesday May 4th, 2011 at 7pm at Red Hawk Golf Course, 6364 Northwest Blvd, to assign open Weekend Standing Tee Times at both Emeis and Duck Creek Golf Courses for the 2011 golf season. Standing Tee Times are available on Saturdays and Sundays between 6 a.m. and 12 pm.

ICE RINK AT RIVER'S EDGE IS OPERATIONAL AGAIN

The Ice Rink at River's Edge, 700 W River Drive in Davenport, is up and operational again after some maintenance work. The  maintenance work was a 3-year scheduled process, which is essential for a high quality ice experience. With the ice back in operation, the following public skate sessions have been scheduled:

Mon. April 25

11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Public Skate
6:00 - 8:00 PM Public Skate

Wed. April 27

11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Public Skate
6:00 - 8:00 PM Public Skate

Fri. April 29

11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Public Skate

Sat. April 30

12:15- 2:15 PM Public Skate
6:00 - 8:00 PM Public Skate

Patrons are invited to come down and enjoy the ice during these public skate sessions.  This schedule will be posted on the Parks website at www.cityofdavenport.com/parks, or questions can be directed to the River's Edge at 563-326-7812.

Flood waters have not closed the facility. River's Edge will remain open normal business hours during the flood, 8am - 8pm, Monday - Sunday. Patrons may access the building by parking on the street in the vicinity of Western and 2nd Street, and taking the elevated walkway at Western and River Drive into the building. All scheduled activities at the River's Edge will take place throughout the flood.

Boaters get another chance for more fun

Quad-Cities area boaters are getting another chance to have more fun on their boats this summer.

Two more Boating Skills & Seamanship courses, one in Davenport and one in Rock Island, beginning this month.

The Davenport course will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 26 to May 12 covering three lessons a night. The course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Scott Community College annex above the bus station. To register for the course call the college at (309) 441-4001 and ask for course number 90696. For more information call Dave or Becky Griesbach at (563) 286-8301.

The Rock Island course will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. April 28 to May 31 covering two lessons a night. The course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the South Rock Island Township Hall, 1019 27th St. in Rock Island. Registration for the course will be before class the first night. For more information call Jack or Judy Tumbleson at (309) 738-0837.

The textbook for the course costs $30 and it may be shared by people taking the course together. There is no other charge for the courses.

Participants will increase their fun by learning how to avoid trailering problems, tricks on handling and anchoring their boat, how to navigate their pieces of the river and how to be safe on the water.

  • Kindernature: Earth Day-Every Day Tues April 12thth 10:00am-11:00am at Vander Veer Botanical Park Conservatory.  Cost 8.00, parent attends with child.
  • Wheelchair Tennis Clinic - April 15th 6:30-7:30pm. Join us for a wheelchair tennis clinic hosted at the Bettendorf Life Fitness Center.  Wheelchair tennis provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers and family, whether able-bodies or disabled.
  • Cream of the Crop Tour-Allen Grove's Greenhouse- Sat. April 16th 10:00am-12:00pm Farm Site.  Fee 15.00 Come visit a family owned site.  Get a jump start and enjoy first pick of fabulous annuals for containers. And the garden.
  • Spring Egg Hunt/Healthy Kids Day Sat April 16th : Egg Huntpromptly at 10am-Healthy Kids Day to follow.  Vander Veer Botanical Park (River's edge inclement weather site).  Pre-register for egg hunt only $2.00 per child- $5.00 per child day of event.  Healthy Kids Day is 10:30-2:00 Free activities after the Egg Hunt!
  • Toddler Egg Hunt Thursday, April 21st:Toddlers can plan on a good time scrambling for eggs in our indoor arena at the River's Edge.  Children 5 and under are welcome. Event takes place from 10:00am - 12:00pm with the scramble at 10:30am sharp! $5.00 per child.

River's Edge- Located at 700 W. River Drive (Across from Modern Woodmen Park

  • The Ice will be melted for maintenance beginning April 3rd and rebuilt in approximately 2 weeks. It will be repainted with new center ice sponsor Mediacom.
  • Batting Cages were installed on the turf field and is now open for rental. The field will be available for rental with full field and half field options. The package will include cage usage, batting tee stations, pitching mounds and open turf space for ground balls. *Bats and balls are not supplied*.
  • Spring and Summer Adult sports leagues are open for registration now! We offer indoor and outdoor soccer, flag football and dodge ball.
  • Don't forget about Birthday Party packages where you get plenty of food and fun for everyone!

 

 

 

GOLF:

  • All Three City courses are now open for the season, as of April 1, 2011. Emeis Golf Course, Duck Creek Golf Course and Red Hawk Golf & Learning Center.
  • Duck Creek Golf Course now has a full service practice range, unveiled late last season.
  • Many landscaping and drainage renovations are planned this early spring to improve courses.
  • Kimberly Concessions will be providing concession services this season.

RED HAWK GOLF AND LEARNING CENTER OPENS FRIDAY, APRIL 1 SERVING QUAD CITY YOUTH

Red Hawk Golf & Learning Center will open for the season on Friday, April 1. Located at 6364 Northwest Boulevard in Davenport, customers can reach the golf course at 563-386-0348.

This 9-hole golf course and 3-hole practice course was formed in 2002 as a result of a partnership between the City of Davenport and the Quad Cities First Tee Program. The First Tee of the Quad Cities provides greater access to the game of golf for underprivileged and disadvantage youth in the Quad Cities. In its 8th year of operation at Red Hawk Golf & Learning Center, kids learn not only the joy of golf, but also lessons in integrity and other positive skills behavior. First Tee of the Quad Cities is a non-profit group that promotes golf and its virtues to the youth of the Quad Cities. Brant McGivern, the PGA professional at Red Hawk, is also the director of the First Tee Program.

Red Hawk is a unique, executive style golf course that offers programs for golfers of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. The operation includes full service practice facilities and a driving range. Recent renovations include the addition of a lighted range for night practice, a large putting green and practice chipping green, and the addition of three ponds. One of the ponds along Pine Street is also now lighted. The 3-hole practice course and other training facilities make Red Hawk an ideal facility for beginners to learn the game of golf, and for more experienced players to improve their skills. Its 9-hole setup also allows for a quick game of golf for golfers of any skill level.

With the opening of Red Hawk Golf & Learning Center on April 1, all three public courses in the City of Davenport will now be open for the season. Many improvements are in place to insure a great experience; Duck Creek Golf Course recently unveiled a new Full-Service Practice Range.

• New Range-Ball Machines were purchased that will accept bills and credit cards.

• Kimberly Concessions is now operating the concession areas of all three courses.

• Various landscaping renovations are underway to improve all three courses.

"We're excited about all the improvements at our courses", said Troy Evans, Senior Revenue Facilities Manager for the City of Davenport. "Our championship course at Emeis, our classic course at Duck Creek, and our executive style course at Red Hawk offer golfers of the Quad Cities a great range of choices at the best value.
