The Quad-City Disc Golf Club, or QCDGC, is once again hosting the annual Disc Golf Ice Bowl, set for Feb. 21 at Prospect Park, Moline. Proceeds from this year's event again will benefit the River Bend Foodbank, Moline. Last year's QC Ice Bowl gathered about 250 pounds of food and more than $600.

The Ice Bowl is for all those disc golfers gutsy, crazy, desperate or fun-loving enough to join together in an act of disc golf solidarity. Regardless of the weather conditions, the idea is to have fun, raise funds and food for a local food bank and dispel the gloom of winter. There are mandatory Ice Bowl Rules: No. 1 - Under no circumstances may an Ice Bowl be cancelled or postponed because of weather conditions. No. 2 - No wimps or whiners are allowed. No. 3 - There are no excuses for not attending ... Either be there or be a wimp! For 2007, more than 200 Ice Bowls have been scheduled throughout North America and in parts of Europe.

Registration for the Ice Bowl runs from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the shelter by the pond and tee off is at 11 a.m. The entry fee is $15 plus 5 canned goods. Each entrant gets a player's pack containing an Ice Bowl commemorative disc. Players are encouraged to bring more canned goods, as the person who donates the most canned good items will take home an Innova DISCatcher portable basket. All players are welcome regardless of ability and the field will be split into three categories: Recreational, Intermediate and Pro. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division. For more information, visit www.qcdiscgolfclub.com.

All proceeds and canned good goods collected with go to River Bend Foodbank, Moline. River Bend Foodbank distributes to more than 300 charitable community organizations that support the hungry. The Foodbank's service area includes the Quad Cities and 22 counties in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. For more about the River Bend Foodbank, please visit www.riverbendfoodbank.org.
The Quad City Sports Center is proud to announce that they are currently running one of the most successful OneGoal Hockey programs in the United States. Justin Nelson, on-ice coordinator and Todd Finch, off-ice coordinator, have been extremely overwhelmed with the attendance numbers they have achieved with children throughout the Quad Cities. On average, every OneGoal Hockey session has 70-90 players attending each 6-week period. Our OneGoal is to give kids a cost effective opportunity to play a sport that is usually expensive. Our OneGoal Hockey program is on Monday Nights from 6:15pm - 7:45pm here at the QCSC, and our next session starts April 9th, 2009. Please contact Justin Nelson for more information or questions concerning OneGoal Hockey at 563-322-5220 ext. or nellyspowerskating@Gmail.com.

YMCA Offers A Unique Way To Put Some Distance Between You and Those Unwanted Pounds!

At 2,360 miles, the Mississippi River is the fourth longest river in the world.  So if you could, how long would it take you to swim the entire thing?  The Scott County Family Y is giving you the opportunity to answer that question with its Swim the Mississippi fitness program.

"Swim the Mississippi is new twist on an old favorite - aquatic fitness," said Emily Jacobson, Aquatics Director, Davenport Family YMCA.  "It gives participants a visual image with a start and stopping point, which in turn gives them a goal to reach and that helps keeps them on track and motivated."

So how does this work?  You don't actually get to swim the Mighty Mississippi but for every one mile you swim in the pool, the Scott County Family Y will count it as 40 miles of the Mississippi, which means your total mileage will be 59 miles (2,124 laps or 4,248 lengths of a 25 meter pool).  Sound like a lot?  Not so, you have until June 30 to take this amazing journey - one that will benefit your spirit, mind and body.

Swimming is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise because involves the use of almost all the muscles required for movement, without the weight of your body pounding you with each move like when you are walking or running.  Regular swimming builds your muscle strength, endurance, and cardio-vascular fitness. The longer you swim, the more your endurance and speed will improve.

Anyone interested in participating in the Swim the Mississippi program can register at the Davenport Family YMCA, 606 West Second Street.  Registration fee for this program is $15 per person.  Mileage can be completed at any Scott County Family Y branch location but the official record will be kept and charted at the Davenport branch.  All participants completing the distance by Tuesday, June 30, will receive an official "I Swam the Mississippi" t-shirt and a certificate of completion.  For more information about this or other health and wellness programs, visit www.ScottCountyFamilyY.org or contact any Scott County Family Y branch location.

Trivia Night

Image

The friends and family of Jared and Beth Johnson are hosting a trivia night fundraiser to help the couple with their adoption of twin boys from South Korea. Teams cost $80 and may have up to 8 members. Silent Auction items, mulligans, and a cash bar will also be available at the event. Top prize is $200. To register, contact Kim Nimrick at (309) 786-3591 or trivianight02@gmail.com.

Beth and Jared Johnson are a Quad-Cities couple building their family through international adoption. In 2005, they brought home their oldest son, Thomas Jung-hyun, from South Korea. "We are so lucky to have a strong community of support around us," said Jared. "Before we brought Thomas home, all of our friends and family pitched in to host a multi-family yard sale that raised nearly $2,000. That was enough to pay for our plane tickets to South Korea. This time, since it is not really yard sale season, they came up with this wonderful idea of having a trivia night." Jared and Beth are currently in the process of adopting a pair of twins, Russell Jin-pyo and Elliot Jin-seo, also from South Korea. All the money raised by this Trivia Night will go towards helping the Johnsons bring home their newest family members. Jared and Beth both grew up in East Moline and currently live in Davenport. Jared is the Director of Marketing for the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, and Beth is staying at home with their now 3-year-old son Thomas. If you are interested in donating items for silent auction, or simply giving money to the cause, please contact Susan Curry at (309) 752-1917.
