The Quad Cities brings its history to life during the spirited month of October with many spooky activities for kids and adults alike!

Climb over an enormous couch, jump on a huge bed, crawl through doors, run through masses of bubbles, and throw dishes at a big dishwasher! It's all part of the Families On! Challenge, the first and only nationwide obstacle race of its kind, and it's coming to the Quad Cities.

Your team can take on the 2.5-mile course together with its 16 over-the-top challenges on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Credit Island Park, 2200 West River Drive in Davenport, Iowa, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families, friends, and co-workers can sign up as a team to participate at familieson.com. The challenge does not end with the obstacle course, a Celebration Station brings the fun from the race to the stage. Local youth music, theatre, and dance performances will occur throughout the day.

With a new course this year, the Lagomarcino's Cocoa Beano 5K Race is great fun for the whole family. It starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Lagomarcino's, 2132 E. 11th Avenue in the Village of East Davenport, Iowa. Race admission includes: High Quality Fleece Vest, Lagomarcino's Chocolate, and the post-race party. Register at lagomarcinos.com. This century-old, family-owned soda fountain is famous for hot fudge sundaes, hand-dipped chocolates, and sponge candy.

Bring your children to celebrate Halloween on Thursday, Oct. 30 in The Downtown Rock Island Arts & Entertainment District of Rock Island, Illinois. During Fright Night visit participating art galleries, shops, and restaurants for spooky surprises throughout the evening from 5-8 p.m. Find treats at the different sites and see whose costume is the best. Storytellers will weave spine-tingling tales; pumpkin carvers will showcase their wicked designs; and kids can join in with make-and-take activities. Free admission.

Hotel Blackhawk, 200 E. 3rd St. in downtown Davenport, Iowa, hosts a Halloween Howling Ball on Friday, October 31, 2014, from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Gold Room. Come in costume for the costume contest; dance the night away; capture the night with photo booth fun; and enjoy appetizers, drinks, and a spooky themed cocktail. Cost is $50 per person. Built in 1915, the Hotel Blackhawk re-opened in 2010 after a multi-million dollar renovation. It is part of the exclusive Autograph Collection Hotels. To purchase tickets, contact 563-484-5906 or visit hotelblackhawk.com for more information.

Davenport - The Midwest Clown Association (MCA), an organization serving the educational needs of clowns in a seven-state region, will be holding their annual conference, called a Round-Up, October 1-5, 2014 at the Clarion Hotel Conference Center in Davenport, Iowa.

This will be MCA's 41st annual convention, with a theme of going "Back to School," providing classes for everyone from novice clowns to professional entertainers.  The Round-Up will feature 2010 World Clown Association Clown of the Year and Clowns of America International "Best in Clown" award winner Julie "Lovely Buttons" Varholdt, as well as Norm "The Great Normondo" Barnhart, a 2008 World Clown Association Clown of the Year and 2007 America's Funniest Magician award winner in Las Vegas, as headline performers.  The week will also include various competitions in make-up and costuming, balloon sculptures, face painting, skits and parade gags.

Midwest Clown Association was created to provide continuing education and promotion for the art of clowning in a seven-state region, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.  The organization's website (www. http://) provides up-to-date information from the association, registration information for conferences, a photo gallery of past competition winners, and schedules for upcoming events.  During the Round-Up, skit and parade competitions are open to the public with free admittance.  Skit competitions are held on Friday evening, beginning at 7:00 p.m., and parade competition begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

"We're excited to be back in Davenport!  The local Quad Cities Clown Troupe hosted the convention at this same location in 2012, and our experience was such a good one, that the board decided to bring the Round-Up back to Iowa this year," stated board member Angela "Q.T. Pie" Gonzalez.  "You don't have to be a member of an established clown group in order to register and attend the convention.  Everyone is welcome, even if you've never clowned before.  There will be classes for all levels of clowning.  Our members are passionate about the art of clowning, and sharing it with others is one of our greatest joys!"

Special Event Encourages Adults to Spend Meaningful Time with Kids, Proving One Day Can Change a Child's Future

IA/ILL QUAD CITIES-Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley (BGCMV) is gearing up to celebrate its annual Day for Kids event to highlight the critical needs of children in the community. Today, too many youth are facing serious issues that can deprive them of a happy, healthy childhood and negatively impact their future. Day for Kids celebrates the life-changing work taking place at Boys & Girls Clubs each day by encouraging adults to spend meaningful time with young people and engage in fun and active play. This year's Day for Kids will be celebrated with over 200 parents and kids participating in an event at BGCMV's Teen Center.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley is one of hundreds of Day for Kids events planned nationwide. The Quad City event will take place at BGCMV's Teen Center (1122 5th Avenue, Moline) on Saturday, September 20th from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and will include games and prizes, music, martial arts demonstrations, an inflatable obstacle course, a helicopter, community exhibitor booths, food and representatives from the Moline Fire Department and the Rock Island County K-9 Unit. The event is free to the public. Food vendors will be available.

Day for Kids aligns with Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley's overall initiative to help young people become more actively engaged in their community, live a healthy lifestyle and achieve academic success. The 'play' incorporated in the Day for Kids event fosters creativity, imagination, exploration and helps kids develop and master various skills.

"Day for Kids creates a unique opportunity for adults to relive their childhood. Our amazing supporters 'Pledge to Play' fostering stronger relationships and meaningful time spent with local youth," says Tim Tolliver, CEO/President , Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley. "Year-round our Clubs offer a safe place where kids can be empowered to make choices that allow them to have a great future. With the support of the community today and every day, we can help kids reach their full potential by staying on track to graduate, demonstrating good character and citizenship and practicing healthy lifestyles."

Supporting our kids is a critical issue for our nation where kids are in crisis. Today's generation is estimated to be worse off than their parents. Our nation's graduation rate ranks 22nd among 28 countries and three out of 10 kids are obese or overweight. One in 5 American kids live in poverty. Boys & Girls Clubs believe that every young person in America deserves a great future and that ensuring a safe, productive place for them to spend out-of-school time is a vital, yet overlooked, factor.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America has created engaging educational resources to help communities encourage and develop positive relationships with kids. A year-round web site, www.dayforkids.org, provides tools, resources and tips that support their interactions with young people.

Day for Kids is also part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Great Futures Campaign. The Great Futures Campaign aims to redefine the opportunity equation for America's kids and call attention to the critical role of out-of-school time in reversing the negative trends facing today's youth. With the public's support, Boys & Girls Clubs will inspire and empower more kids toward success through life-changing programs and resources.
