MOLINE, Ill. - Students from the cosmetology program at Midwest Technical Institute's Moline campus location will host the first ever runway show open to the public at noon June 24 at the MTI campus, 3620 Avenue of the Cities.

The show will exclusively feature students from the school's cosmetology program in an effort to highlight their work and the available services at the school's Student Salon. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and there is no cost to attend.

In addition, the show will feature complimentary refreshments and all attendees will receive a coupon good for 50 percent off of hair, nail and skin services at the school's Student Salon.

The first annual public runway show will feature several themes with corresponding hairstyles. MTI Instructor of Cosmetology Amy Pettifer says the idea to make this year's runway show public was something of a no-brainer given how enthusiastic students have been about the private shows in previous years. "We are hoping the students will be able to graduate MTI with the self-confidence that if they can do a small runway show here at MTI, they will be able to do larger more intense shows here ever their careers may take them," said Pettifer, who's been with MTI since October of last year.

But Pettifer also feels events like the upcoming show are a crucial part of a student's training. MTI's cosmetology students engage in a rigorous curriculum of classroom learning, but they also work in the Moline Student Salon to gain the real-world experience necessary to enter the cosmetology field upon graduation."You wouldn't think it but there is so much book work that goes along with cosmetology," explained Pettifer, who's already optimistic about the prospect of upcoming runway shows. "This runway show will be our first one open to the public, but we hope to have many more with each one getting bigger and bigger each time," said Pettifer.

MTI's cosmetology program offers students an accelerated training program, small classes, financial aid opportunities and more. For more information about the runway show or program, contact Campus Director Mary Link at (309) 277-7900. For more information about the Moline Student Salon, call (309) 277-7940. Interview opportunities and other media requests should be directed to MTI's Director of Marketing Stacey Wierman at (217) 527-8324, ext. 1178.

Rock Island, IL: Free public programs at the Rock Island Library next week will allow guests to "see" the western frontier of Rock Island through the eyes of a  female traveler and get a quick verbal estimate on the worth of family treasures.

On Tuesday, June 16, local historian Gayle Rein will portray 19th Century author and social reformer Catharine Maria Sedgwick, one of the original Grand Excursion riders. "The June 1854 Grand Excursion was a festive affair that carried hundreds of dignitaries on a combination rail and steamboat ride from Chicago to Rock Island, Illinois then on to St. Paul in Minnesota Territory," according to Grand Excursions on the Upper Mississippi River, edited by Curtis C. Roseman and Elizabeth M. Roseman (University of Iowa Press, 2004.)

In Catharine Maria Sedgwick Rides the Train to Rock Island, Rein presents Catharine's observations of her trip to the western frontier of Rock Island and the beauty of the Mississippi River. The free event begins at 6:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street.

On Thursday, June 18, residents can find out how much some of their family treasures may be worth with an Antique Appraisal Fair event. Certified Appraiser Terri Applegate, of LeClaire Antiques & Appraisals, will be available to offer free verbal appraisals of up to four items per person. Items must be able to be carried by hand. Assistance will not be available with large or bulky items. The free event takes place from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the Main Library Community Room.

"Escape the Ordinary" free special events and reading contests for adults at the Rock Island Library continue through Saturday, July 18.

For more information, visit the library's online branch at www.rockislandlibrary.org, call 309-732-READ, or follow the library on Facebook or Twitter.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is joining thousands of area residents in the fight against breast cancer by participating in the Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure this Saturday, June 13 at 8:00 a.m. in Moline benefitting breast cancer screenings, education, and research.
"As a husband to a breast cancer survivor, I know how important proper screening and treatment can be and Susan G. Komen Quad Cities is an unbelievable organization that helps provide critical support to thousands of local families," Smiddy said. "I urge area residents to join me in supporting the brave patients that battle this disease. Everyone should stand with this wonderful organization by participating in the run/walk or making a donation to help families receive the care they need."
The Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure was first held in 1990 and was among the first races of its kind in the nation. The Quad Cities organization serves over 500,000 residents in the bi-state area and has funded over 13,000 mammograms since 1990. Access to breast health is a major priority for Smiddy in Springfield, where he has introduced legislation requiring all insurance plans to cover preventative breast cancer screening.
"Seventy-five percent of the funds raised through the Race go toward supporting local breast health services, so participation or donations will help our neighbors who are faced with breast cancer," said Christina McNamara-Schmidt, Marketing and Sponsorship Chair for the Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure. "I'd like to thank Representative Smiddy for urging everyone to get involved in the fight against breast cancer and for the steps he's taking in Illinois to improve women's health."
To make a donation or to register for the race, visit http://komenquadcities.org/ or call 563-742-7465.
