Davenport Public Library to Host “Dante: Our Journey Towards Wholeness” Series

DAVENPORT, IOWA (March 3, 2023) — Join us at Eastern for a three-week series of programs beginning Saturday, March 11, 3PM. Our guide Daniel Christian will lead you on a journey to explore the works and world of Dante Alighieri — and learn more about yourself in the process. Each week we will focus on one of the three parts of the “Divine Comedy”: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Participants are welcome to join in for any portion of the series.

Davenport Public Library to Host “Gregoria Fraser Goins: A Worthy Subject in Her Own Right,” Presented by Dr Lauren Hammond Ford PhD, Associate Professor of History at Augustana College

DAVENPORT, IOWA (March 2, 2023) — This public talk provides insight into the compelling life of Gregoria Fraser Goins, an Afro-Dominican woman on the margins of African-American history. Born to a West Indian apothecary and an African-American doctor in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, in 1883, Goins and her mother relocated to the United States following her father’s untimely death. Goins lived most of her life amongst well-to-do African-Americans in Washington DC.

WQPT Brings Back the Ready to Learn Conference

Augustana College to Host “Birth of the Computer: The John Atanasoff Story” in Partnership with the Davenport Public Library and Rock Island Public Library

Atanasoff traveled to Rock Island, Illinois, where he conceptualized the first digital computer in 1937. Midwest Writing Center Presents 15th Annual Iron Pen Contest

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (February 13, 2023) — The Midwest Writing Center is taking registrations for its 15th annual Iron Pen Contest. MWC will supply a prompt to all contestants at 5PM, Friday, February 24, and contestants have 24 hours (entries are due Saturday, February 25, 5PM) to write and submit their best fiction, non-fiction, and/or poetry pieces. Writers are welcome to enter into as many categories as they like with a paid registration for each entry.

Davenport Public Library Invites You to Learn About Quad-City Civil Rights Activists

DAVENPORT, IOWA (February 7, 2023) — Come learn about Quad City civil-rights activists. Inspired by their participation in the historic 1963 March on Washington Quad City activists share their stories through a screening of the new documentary film I Am the Future: Standing on the Shoulders of the Past. Attendees can expect an in-person discussion is to follow the film. This event is presented by Glenda Guster and Progressive Action for the Common Good.
