Red Cedar Chamber Music presents Seven Score and Ten on Saturday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m. at Brucemore. The intimate wintertime concert marks the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, featuring American music that inspired the troops, supported the war effort, and entertained those at home. Red Cedar Chamber Music's flutist Jan Boland and guitarist John Dowdall will be joined by soprano Karla Goettel. A champagne and dessert reception will be held during intermission. Tickets are $35 per person or $30 per Brucemore member. Space is limited; purchase tickets online at www.brucemore.org, by telephone at (319) 362-7375, or by visiting the Brucemore Store.

The concert presents poignant ballads like Aura Lee and Stephen Foster's Gentle Annie, lively dance tunes like Governor's Grays Schottisch and The Cruel War Quickstep, battle-inspired melodies like Ellsworth's Funeral March and Sherman's March to the Sea, and nostalgic tunes sung by soldiers both North and South like Auld Lang Syne. The artists bring an Iowa perspective to the Civil War era, interspersing the music with conversation about the impact of the war, readings from Iowa diaries and letters, and some of the earliest tunes published in Iowa.

Karla Goettel's soprano voice serves her in a career of extraordinary range. She has toured the United States, singing opera, musical theater, concerts with orchestras, and solo recitals. Karla has been a frequent soloist with Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale and Orchestra Iowa, including the 2008 Brucemorechestra concert on Brucemore's lawn. She held a 12-week contract with Old Creamery Theatre and has sung two principal roles with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre. She has also performed with the Omaha, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Clinton, Dubuque, Wartburg, and Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestras. Karla was a National Opera Association finalist and was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America twice. She was selected to sing for the National Governor's convention in July 2005. Her CD, "Just Great Songs," was released in December 2007 to glowing reviews.

The Seven Score and Ten concert provides a natural partnership between two local cultural organizations?nineteenth-century chamber music in a nineteenth-century parlor. As artists in residence at Brucemore in 1983, Jan Boland and John Dowdall began performing nineteenth-century music on period instruments?an 1830 wooden flute and an 1830 gut-strung guitar. Currently celebrating its sixteenth season, Red Cedar Chamber Music continually strives to reach, challenge, and expand audiences that rarely have the opportunity to attend chamber music performances. Red Cedar Chamber musicians inform and entertain audiences, engaging them with lively commentary about the music, composers, and instruments. Their first recording, Czech Chamber Music, received a Critics' Choice award from the American Record Guide, which stated, "Chamber music should be just like this?intimate, bonding, and conversational." Red Cedar Chamber Music returned home to Brucemore in 2009, 2011, and 2012. DAVENPORT - The Putnam Museum partners with the Quad City Engineering and Science Council for the 4th annual FIRST Lego League Regional Competition held on December 15 & 16. The FIRST Lego Robotics Competition is a competition of regional 3rd-8th grade teams who are part of the international FIRST robotics program. The teams (up to 10 members) bring their self-programmed robots to face off against other teams in a live challenge for points based on completion of "missions" in a 2-minute timeframe. In addition, the teams are judged on how well they work together and on their presentation of solving a real-world problem - this year with assisting Senior Citizens. New this year: Jr. First Lego League teams!

"Iowa FIRST LEGO League has experienced growth every year since beginning in the state. This year, however, we have had a team explosion with over 400 teams participating in FLL in the state thanks in part to the overwhelming excitement of participants and volunteers plus the support from industry such as John Deere, Rockwell Collins and the Governor's STEM initiative, establishing STEM Hubs across the state and the legislature appropriating funds to support that effort through Scale Up programs like FIRST LEGO League.

We are excited for so many young people to get the opportunity to be exposed to quality STEM programming through the Iowa FLL events like those at the Putnam Museum, getting to show off all they've learned in high energy, highly supportive environments celebrating the future of innovation through every child's creativity." - CAMILLE SLOAN SCHROEDER, ENGINEERING K-12 COMMUNITY OUTREACH, IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

No registration is involved for this event; registration for teams is closed for this year. We invite you to come and check out the competition for free, located in our Grand Lobby.

Davenport, Iowa (December 2012) - The Figge Art Museum is pleased to announce it has received a grant from Humanities Iowa. The Figge was recently awarded a $5,000 grant for its upcoming exhibition Marking Territory: Cartographic Treasures of the Mississippi Valley and the World Beyond which will be on display from March 3, 2013 - June 16, 2013.

Marking Territory is a Figge-curated exhibition that draws upon the map collection of the University of Iowa Libraries as well as a private collection. Featuring a selection of 25-plus historic maps that range from early representations of the world to more detailed examinations of America's vast interior west of the Mississippi, the exhibition explores how maps communicate highly complex ideas about identity, politics and culture. The exhibition will be part of the Figge's ongoing exhibition series Visions of Iowa. Established in 2009, the series provides a platform for showcasing art that provides a historical and contemporary perspective on the people and places that make up Iowa.

The exhibition will be supplemented with extensive educational programming such as lectures, gallery talks and family events. Funding from Humanities Iowa will be used to support educational programming for the exhibition.

DAVENPORT – Premier Exhibitions, Inc. and the Putnam Museum announced today that Bodies Revealed will open Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Putnam Museum in Davenport, IA.  Bodies Revealed will provide the public with an opportunity to see inside carefully preserved real anatomical specimens and learn the detailed structure and function of the human body.

"The Bodies Revealed exhibit is a unique opportunity to SEE the impact of our lifestyle choices - what and how much we eat, whether we smoke, how often we exercise. We are surrounded by messages about the importance of healthy living - for many of us though, seeing is believing that ""an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."" At a time when health policy is on our collective minds, we are excited for the Quad Cities area to take advantage of this exhibit's unique look at the wonders of the human body." - Kim Findlay, CEO/President of the Putnam Museum.

"Trinity is happy to help the Putnam bring this fascinating educational opportunity to the Quad-Cities," said Rick Seidler, President and CEO of Trinity Regional Health System, a sponsor of the Bodies Revealed exhibit. "The body is such a complex system; it will be a real eye-opener for people to see exactly how ongoing exposure to unhealthy habits can impact it."

Trinity and the Putnam Museum are collaborating to coordinate a variety of activities in conjunction with the exhibit, including educational seminars, physician presentations, and prevention and awareness events. Trinity healthcare providers also will help serve as guides during the run of the exhibition.

The Exhibition takes visitors through galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body. Many of the whole body specimens are dissected in vivid athletic poses, allowing the visitor to relate to everyday activities. In addition, authentic human specimens illustrate the damage caused to organs by over-eating and lack of exercise. A healthy lung is featured next to a black lung ravaged by smoking in a vivid comparison more powerful than any textbook image.

The human body specimens in the exhibition are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation. In this process, human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened. The end result is a rubberized specimen, preserved to the cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body's many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs. The full-body specimens can take more than a year to prepare.

The Exhibition is currently receiving worldwide acclaim attracting nearly 15 million visitors from cities around the world.

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. is a major provider of Museum quality touring exhibitions throughout the world.
