"The Yellow House" will be displayed in U.S. Capitol

 

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today congratulated Chelsea Page from Montrose, who is in 10th grade at Central Lee High School in Donnellson, for being named the Second District's winner in the 2012 Congressional Art Competition.  Page's watercolor, entitled "The Yellow House," will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.  She will also receive two round trip tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.  This year's competition was hosted at the University of Iowa's Art West Building and the winning piece was selected by judges Rachel Williams, UI Associate Professor of Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies/Media, Social Practice, and Design and Peter Feldstein, photographer and originator of "The Oxford Project."

 

"I was very impressed by the quality of this year's entries.  The creativity demonstrated by all of the talented young artists in Iowa proves that the arts are thriving," said Loebsack. "I especially want to congratulate this year's winner Chelsea Page and I look forward to seeing her watercolor displayed in the Capitol."

 

In the spring of every year, the United States House of Representatives hosts a competition to recognize talented young artists from across the nation. The winning student from each district is invited to Washington, D.C. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Moline, IL - Congressman Bobby Schilling (IL-17) will be hosting a reception in honor of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition on Saturday, May 5 at the Augustana College Art Museum in Rock Island.  This is the annual Congressional Art Show's 30th year, and Schilling has invited high schools from across the district to participate.

"The Congressional Art Competition is a wonderful opportunity to highlight our area's talented young people," Schilling said. "I look forward to seeing their skill and creativity on display at this weekend's reception."

Each high school in the 17th District has been offered the opportunity to submit up to five pieces of artwork for display at Saturday's art show.  A total of three votes will determine the winners.  Two local art experts will be the core judges, with the third vote cast by a compilation of votes cast by the reception's attendees.  The first place finisher will have his or her piece displayed for the next year in a corridor of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC along with winning pieces from other congressional districts around the country.  Sponsored by the Congressional Institute, the first place finisher and one guest will receive a free flight to Washington, DC to attend the 2012 Congressional Art Competition Reception on Capitol Hill and see their work on display.  The remaining four artists may select to have their pieces featured in Schilling's district offices for the remainder of the year.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 as a way to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of our country's youth. Since it was launched, more than 650,000 students have participated nationwide.

The public is invited to join the Muscatine Art Center in welcoming Muscatine native John Duggleby, writer and musician, as he presents a program based on his book, Artist in Overalls: The Life of Grant Wood. This event will take place Sunday, May 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the Muscatine Art Center's Music Room and is free and open to the public. There will be copies of John Duggleby's book to purchase at this event.

John has written several books for young people, including biographies on musicians John Lennon, Ray Charles, and artist Jacob Lawrence. Artist in Overalls, one of Duggleby's eight children's books, has received several distinctions including the National  Association of Christian Schools' Children's Crown Award and the Parents Council Seal of Approval. His book, Story Painter: The Life of Jacob Lawrence, was honored by the National Council for Social Studies as the Elementary Book of the Year.

Artist in Overalls reveals Grant Wood's story to audiences of all ages in a fun and interactive way. Dressed like the famous farmer in Wood's American Gothic painting, Duggleby shows how Wood's Iowa childhood observations and resolve to follow his instincts resulted in fame that has endured through this American cultural icon.

Paul Algueseva III has an open studio planned for May 5 and 6 at his home studio in Davenport. This is through the Spring Mississippi River Valley Art Drive and he will be open from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (2314 Elm Street, Davenport - 563-355-9220). He regularly is at CASI on Mondays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. & Thursday from 12:30-2:30 p.m.  teaching clay hand building and acrylic painting at the same time. The student works are shown in the corridors at CASI. He just received a grant to teach at Jane's Place, and will start the first class in May. Paul shows in various places in Iowa and Illinois.

Allen will take part in the Spring Mississippi Valley Art Drive Sat., May 5 displaying in LeClaire on the grounds of Re-Usable Usables/weather permitting (322 N. Cody Road).  In addition he will man a vending space demoing and selling his dog portraiture work at the QCCA Expo Center over Mother's Day weekend (May 12 + 13) during the Scott County Kennel Club Dog Show and will be entering 3 pieces in the Geneseo Maple City Art Fine arts competition.  He teaches beginning acrylic classes through Grumbacher's and Michaels Arts & Crafts about every other Saturday and one evening night during the week (check Michaels for schedules).  In addition coming up he has a Saturday class through the Figge in July and another Pastel class in Sept.

Sunday, April 22 9:30–4:30. David will demonstrate step by step and follow up with individual attention.

Supply list: easel, pastels, charcoal and paper for simple value sketches, eraser (Moo preferred (Hobby Lobby), paper (sanded), board and a good landscape photo.

There is one hour lunch break, so bring a lunch or plan to order out. Coffee & snacks provided.

For those who have never used pastels before, contact Rose Moore. We will try to have some pastels and sample paper available. It's great opportunity to try the medium without the major expense of buying everything at once.
