Yesterday, Wednesday, Dec. 5, Anthony Carroll, AARP Iowa Associate State Director for Advocacy, and Mary Ann Young, AARP Iowa Executive Council member from Des Moines, met in Washington, D.C. with Senators Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin, carrying the message of the overwhelming majority of AARP Iowa members to keep Medicare and Social Security cuts out of the "fiscal cliff" negotiations.

After their visits to Capitol Hill, Mary Ann Young, along with AARP's Director of Policy David Certner, and AARP Colorado volunteer Jean Nofles, were interviewed by CNN.  The story will be featured today on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer from, 4-6 p.m. EST.

Across all party lines, older Americans and Iowans, have serious concerns about efforts to make major changes to health care and retirement benefits they have paid into and depend on - especially as part of any rushed, end-of-year bargaining.

Attached is a news release about the effects the current "fiscal cliff" cuts to Social Security and Medicare would have on the more than 500,000 Iowans, their families and the State of Illinois.

Anthony Carroll and Mary Ann Young would be available to talk with you on Friday or next week about their Washington trip and AARP's efforts to prevent Congress and the White House from eroding these earned benefits and the economic security of all Americans when it is needed the most.
Enjoy the tenth anniversary of hilarious stories, engaging conversation, and outstanding music with SPT Theatre and special guest, Jim Kern, during A Modern Salon, January 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25, and 26 at 7:30 p.m. Emulating the Parisian salons at the turn of the twentieth century, A Modern Salon is held in the Mansion's Great Hall, where Brucemore's second family, the Douglases, frequently entertained guests. Admission is $45 per person or $40 per Brucemore member and includes pre-show wine tasting from First Avenue Wine House and appetizers starting at 7 p.m. Champagne and desserts will be served during intermission. Evening dress is encouraged and valet parking is available. Space is limited; purchase tickets online at www.brucemore.org, by telephone at (319) 362-7375, or by visiting the Brucemore Store.

No stranger to Brucemore and the local arts scene, Jim Kern will provide comically nostalgic insight into A Modern Salon with this year's theme, "tradition."  As former Assistant Director and Executive Director at Brucemore, Jim was instrumental in expanding the educational programs, tour menu, building and landscape preservation activities, and arts and culture events offered on the estate.  Now that he is officially retired, his biography is a list of former exploits and careers: teacher, stage director, actor, restaurateur, historic site director, development director, caterer, and Oprah panelist.  In short, he could never quite figure out what he wanted to be when and if he grew up.  He currently serves as Chair of the Cedar Rapids Visual Arts Commission, on the boards of the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and Theatre Cedar Rapids, and as travel group host for Destinations Unlimited.  In July, he will return to the Classics at Brucemore, which he co-founded in 1996, as the Artistic Director for Cyrano de Bergerac.

SPT Theatre was founded by Doug Elliott, Gerard Estella, Janelle Lauer, and Jane Pini, four local performing artists looking to support, provide for, and expand the artistic opportunities available to performers and arts patrons in the Cultural Corridor. For further information about SPT Theatre, call (319) 361-5297 or visit www.spttheatre.org.

Experience Brucemore, an unparalleled blend of tradition and culture, located at 2160 Linden Drive SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. At the heart of the historic 26-acre estate stands a nineteenth-century mansion filled with the stories of three Cedar Rapids families.  Concerts, theater, programs, and tours enliven the site and celebrate the heritage of a community.  For more information, call (319) 362-7375 or visit www.brucemore.org.

SEWARD, NE (11/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Naomi Iltis of Le Claire, Iowa, took part in staging the theatre department at Concordia University, Nebraska's presention "Into the Woods," a musical production depicting troubled fairy tale creatures, based on the works of the Brothers Grimm. The musical was performed Nov. 2-3 and Nov. 9-11 in the Weller Hall Auditorium. Iltis served on the Production Crew.

"Into the Woods," written by James Lapine, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, follows the stories of several fairy tale creatures including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack from "Jack and the Beanstock" and Rapunzel. The stories weave with the tale of a baker and his wife on their quest to start a family as they discover they've been cursed by an evil witch.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that his office will provide tickets to President Barack Obama's swearing in ceremony through a lottery system during the month of December.  Residents of Iowa's Second Congressional District who are interested in attending the event must fill out the form at http://loebsack.house.gov/inauguration to register for the lottery.  Each resident awarded a ticket will be responsible for their own travel arrangements.

The lottery drawing will take place in mid-December.  At that time, constituents will be required to provide additional information before they can secure their ticket allotment.

Inauguration Day is Monday, January 21, 2013.   It is expected there will be a variety of events that will not require tickets, including a public viewing area of the Inaugural ceremony on the National Mall and the public Inauguration parade. Iowans unable to attain tickets through Congressman Loebsack's office are encouraged to monitor the Inauguration Planning Committee website, http://inaugural.senate.gov/, for further details on non-ticketed events.

Please be aware that there are a few organizations trying to sell fake tickets to people.  Tickets are only being provided free of charge from official government offices, and tickets must be picked up in person from Loebsack's office before Inauguration. Any group that suggests differently is providing incorrect information.
