While the works themselves are from years, decades, and centuries past, their recent procurement has inspired the title for the Figge Art Museum's latest exhibition New Photography in the Lewis Gallery, a first-ever display of artistic images on view from November 11 through February 4.
Over the past decade, the Figge has experienced significant growth in its collection of fine-art photography. And through important gifts of exceptional works from, among others, the collector and fine-art dealer Brent Sikkema – in addition to strategic purchases of important works from the 19th and 20th Centuries – this collection of fine art photography in the Davenport venue represents many of the key trends in photographic history.
New Photography in the Lewis Gallery will feature a selection of recently acquired works that span nearly 150 years of the photographic medium, with its images including many by internationally recognized photographers such as Des Moines native Gertrude Käsebier (1852-1934), William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), Minor White (1908-1976), Emmet Gowin (b. 1941), and Ann Hamilton (b. 1956). Taken together, the works in the Figge's new exhibit will provide a brief survey of photographic history in America, treating museum guests to iconic images ranging from the classic landscape photographs of the mid-19th Century to the conceptually focused works of the late-20th and early-21st Centuries.
