Run with Carl is Monday at the Life Fitness Center.  We're hoping that break in the weather comes Sunday night.  Our 5 mile race goes at 8:15.  Kids runs start at 7:30am. Also - PVHS ranked in the top 500 schools in the United States, according to Newsweek.  We are the only QCA school on the list and are certainly proud of our students and staff.  Please let me know if you'd like information or an interview pertaining to this story.  Check out the list here à http://www.newsweek.com/topic/high-schools-2015

We hope you've heard, but if you have not, Run with Carl is not over!  Last year, the Schillig family decided to end the Labor Day tradition after 20 years.  The race honors the life of Carl Schillig, a 15-year-old Pleasant Valley Student, who was killed in a car accident in 1994.  The family decided to start a scholarship in his name.  Every year they give out two, one a Bettendorf student, one to a PV student.  That scholarship will continue.

In November of last year, the Schilligs turned the race over to the Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation and the Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation.  The two foundations are now organizing the race, with funds going to the scholarship program at Pleasant Valley (we give out 70+ scholarships a year!) and to grants for Bettendorf students (for ipads, projects, etc.)

The race will still be held Labor Day morning, still starting at the Bettendorf Life Fitness Center.

Hope all is well!  Have a great week!

Spelling Bee!

As many of you know, Uma Kasichainula is participating in the national spelling bee!  She spelled her first word correctly:  flamboyant.  The best way to keep track of her is through twitter @ScrippsBee  #speller65  You can watch live at espn360.com but need a cable provider entered to watch.
We got word today that Pleasant Valley High School is among the top High Schools in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report.  Check out the report here à  http://bit.ly/1zVYB2q
We've got some great things going on at PV that you might want to get on your calendars!

1.       Cardboard boat race - Friday, May 8th, from 8 to two students will take their sea-worthy vessels onto the waves of the Bettendorf Middle Park Lagoon.

There's a record number of teams!  Detailed info here http://bit.ly/1IkIBbC

2.       Biztown - Tuesday, May 19th, PV students will be at JA's biztown.  Students interview for positions in the city and then go to work.  Always good visuals, but good lessons, too, as students learn what it takes to run a community.  We'll be there from 9:00am to 2:00pm

3.       Helping Nepal - Starting May 11th and going until May 15th - Students at Pleasant View Elementary will be bringing in change for the Red Cross.  They've been extremely successful in the past.

The 8th Annual Trebuchet Egg Throw Contest will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Bettendorf High School.  25 Teams with 101 students from 5 high schools are scheduled to participate.   The competition was open to high schools teams from Iowa and Illinois as part of the QC High School Tech Challenge.

Bad Weather Plans: We plan to hold the event even if it rains unless we encounter extreme conditions (rain all day, lighting or high winds) . If we decide to cancel for the entire day, we will send out an e-mail by 8:00 AM to the teams on Friday morning which is unlikely and if so, the event will be rescheduled for the following Monday.

Hello everyone!  Here are some happenings coming up at PV!

Real World Experience for PV Students

Tuesday, April 14th, 4th grade students will interview for JA BizTown!  As you probably know, at BizTown students build their own city, and do all the jobs that come along with it - banker, postmaster, DJ, restaurant owner, journalist.... You name it!  All students will be bussed to the Junior High for the interviews.  Real life experience for our kids!  You'll see a lot of smiling kiddos!  A great photo/video opportunity.  April 14th, Junior High 3501 Wisconsin Street, LeClaire, from 9 to 12.

Wall of Honor

Wednesday, April 15th, PV will add another distinguished alumnus to our Wall of Honor.  Every year we recognize one PV grad for his or her academic achievements and contributions to society.  Dr. Azeemuddin Ahmed is a 1992 graduate and is a professor of business and medicine at the University of Iowa.  He is also the Medical Director for University of Iowa AirCare and the EMS Learning Resources Center.  He will be visiting all PV schools on Wednesday.  There is also a meet and greet at 3:30 and the ceremony at 7:00 at the High School (it's a part of our academic awards night).  Feel free to join us at any point during the day!

Golf Outing!

Our Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation is holding its premier fundraising event April 27th.  Golfers will hit the links at 11am at Palmer Hills Golf Course.  This event raises 10s of thousands of dollars for the school's foundation.  This spring the foundation will give out 70 scholarships for graduating seniors.  Each scholarship is at least $1,000!  I'll do the math for you - that's $70,000 in scholarships!  All money raised in PV for PV students.  There are dozens of stories about our scholarships.  In particular, one of our teachers at the Junior High, Jeff Paul, decided to start a scholarship a few years back.  He chooses a student who needs an extra push and gives them an ipad.  If they continue to succeed through High School, they also receive a scholarship.  He funded the scholarship through monies he's won from road races across the country.  Others have heard of this and are also donating money won in road races - people from all over the country!

***Also - at tonight's board meeting, the board will be discussing the calendar for next year and our budget as well.  That starts at 6 tonight at the Belmont Admin Center (525 Belmond Road, Bettendorf) I will be there, so that's a bonus.
1.       PV boys head to state!

Our boys basketball team will play in the state tournament, Wednesday, March 11th at 6:35 in Des Moines!  There is a fan bus going.  I'm not sure what time they'll be taking off, but if you're interested, let me know and I'll get you a time.

2.       PV Student Heads to National Spelling Bee

Hopewell 6th Grader Uma Kasichainula won the regional spelling bee last week and will represent our area in the National Bee in May.  She is a super nice, well-spoken kid.  If you're interested in this story, holler and we'll make it work!

3.       Quad City Engineering and Science Council Honors PV Volunteer and Teacher

PV Teacher Matt Stutenberg and PV District Robotics Coordinator Theresa Barber received top honors at last week's QCESC award night.  Mr. Stutenberg was named co-STEM Teacher of the year.  Ms. Barber was named Volunteer of the year.  What an honor for a growing program in our district!  (And remember the district is adding on a million dollar STEM lab this year!)

After his time at Augustana he attended medical school at the University of Iowa, graduating in 2000. He completed post graduate training in emergency medicine from 2000-2003 from Michigan State University. In 2010, he completed his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Ahmed was appointed to the medical staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2005. Dr. Ahmed's response to receiving the Wall of Honor recognition: "I've been a lifelong learner whether it's been formal education (college, medical school, residency, graduate business school) or informal education (ready and learning about people, history, politics). It's something that kept me rejuvenated and grounded. There is so much to learn out there and it keeps us growing. I am a big fan of the credo; it's good to know things.

"I serve others. I serve my patients as I meet them and their family often on one of the worst days of their life and I do my best to care for them physically and emotionally. I cannot fix every physical ailment but I try to treat EVERYONE with respect and dignity. No matter how far up the ladder I move and acquire fancy sounding titles, my role is to help people. Rich, poor, young, old, white, black, brown, yellow. It doesn't matter. I do the best I can for every person I care for."

Dr. Ahmed graduated with top honors from PVHS, where he participated in basketball and track & field. He was President of Spartan Assembly, Sports Co-Editor for the Spartan Shield and contributor to the Valenian. He was chosen by his class to give the graduation commencement speech and an honoree in the Quad City Times, Salute to Academics and Achievement.
