3rd Grader To Enjoy Private Flight Over QC, Secret Tour of Historic Bettendorf Mansion

What: Rivermont 3rd Grader to take private flight over QC as part of "Headmaster for a Day"

When: Wednesday, 10/9 - 10:00 a.m.

Where: QC International Airport (Moline) & Rivermont Collegiate campus (1821 Sunset Drive, Bettendorf)

Aidan Sears, 3rd Grade student at Rivermont Collegiate, will take to the skies next Wednesday with Rivermont Headmaster Todd Zachary! Aidan will be taking a ride in a private plane above the Quad Cities and, if weather permits, will even have the opportunity to help steer the plane.

This special day was purchased last spring by Aidan's parents, Melissa and Jim Sears, at Rivermont Collegiate's annual Auction and Dinner fundraiser. This "Headmaster for a Day" item is always popular at the event! A retired Air Force Colonel, Rivermont's new Headmaster Todd Zachary will take Aidan on an unforgettable ride. After the flight, the two will return to Rivermont, where Aidan will enjoy lunch with teachers and sit in on an Upper School class or two. Aidan will also tour hidden rooms, tunnels, and passageways of the historic Bettendorf Mansion on the Rivermont campus.

The plane will take off at approximately 10:00 a.m. from Quad City International Airport. Aidan, Mr. Zachary, and the pilot will be in the air for about an hour.

Rivermont Collegiate is excited to announce that Bonnie Campbell, College Counselor and Chinese language faculty, has been hand-selected to join the Board of Trustees of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS).

This is a significant honor for both Ms. Campbell and Rivermont.  ISACS is a membership organization of more than 230 schools from 13 states of the Midwest region (including Rivermont Collegiate).

Ms. Campbell has been a member of Rivermont's faculty and staff for 16 years and holds a B.A. from the University of Washington and M.A. from the University of Oregon.  She was recently awarded Rivermont's Waterman Chair of Distinguished Teaching, which provides a stipend for professional growth.  With the help of this stipend, she spent 2 weeks over the summer immersed in Chinese language and culture in Taiwan.  Her trip included a visit to the Taipei American School, where she taught English Literature for 2 years.

Lt. Governor Reynolds and Rivermont share a passion for STEM education.  Reynolds is the Co-Chair of the Governor's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Advisory Council and was the only elected official named to the "100 Women Leaders in STEM" by STEMconnector in 2012.  At Rivermont, students begin working with discipline-specific science teachers in Kindergarten and math courses allow them to accelerate to the most appropriate level, regardless of their age or grade.  Technology is interwoven into Rivermont's curriculum, including Kindles, iPads, and a robotics program that spans grades 3-12.  We are thrilled to welcome a recognized STEM leader to Rivermont's 126th Commencement!

Rivermont Collegiate announces the retirement of 3 respected and beloved faculty/administrators at the end of this school year: Suzanne Johnson, Assistant Headmaster and Early and Lower School Head (40 years at Rivermont), Katherine Topalian, First Grade Teacher (32 years at Rivermont), and Linda Hampton, Middle & Upper School Science Faculty (29 years at Rivermont).

Suzanne Johnson began her career at Rivermont (then known as St. Katharine's-St. Mark's) in 1973, the same year the School moved from its original location in Davenport to the historic Bettendorf Mansion.  Sue began teaching Middle School Science, Math, and Physical Education.  She also taught 5th Grade for 19 years before moving into her current position as Assistant Headmaster and Early and Lower School Head.  She has been recognized as a recipient of Rivermont's Waterman Chair of Distinguished Teaching.

Katherine Topalian has taught over 500 Rivermont first graders to read, having held the position of First Grade Teacher for 32 years!  The beloved "Mrs. T" has been recognized as a recipient of Rivermont's Golden Apple Award for Exceptional Teaching and Waterman Chair of Distinguished Teaching.  Always involved in the life of the School, Kathy served as Chair of Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day for over 12 years and Chair of ISACS (Independent Schools Association of the Central States) Evaluation Committees 4 separate times.

For 29 years, Linda Hampton's passion rubbed off on everyone around her as she inspired Rivermont students to take an interest in science.  Though students have consistently taken top science fair honors under her guidance, Linda made a habit of treating every student as an award winner and valuing each project.  She has been the recipient of Rivermont's Golden Apple Award for Exceptional Teaching and Waterman Chair of Distinguished Teaching, as well as numerous outside awards, including Outstanding Mentor at both the Hawkeye Science and Engineering Fair and the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa.

The dedication of these retirees is a direct reflection of their belief in Rivermont and our mission.  Rivermont is the Quad Cities' only private college prep school, dedicated to academic excellence and maximizing the potential of each student.  We congratulate Sue, Kathy, and Linda on all they have accomplished and thank them for the difference they've made in the lives of students they taught and faculty who were privileged to work with them.
