CANTON, MO (09/25/2014)(readMedia)-- Austin Pyrtle, freshman musical theatre major from Davenport, Iowa, has been cast in Culver-Stockton College's musical theatre production, "Urinetown." This 2001 comedy noir satirizes social systems of all types and finds them all wanting. Capitalism, social responsibility--even the very nature of freedom--all are called into question in the face of unintended consequences. Follow your dreams, the idealists urge--but be careful what you wish for. Pyrtle has been cast as Old Man Strong.

Performances run Thursday, October 2 through Saturday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on October 5 at 3 p.m. in the Mabee Black Box Theatre in the lower-level of the Performing Arts Center on the C-SC campus. Dr. Haidee Heaton, professor of theatre, directs this production with musical direction by Dr. Elliot Jones, professor of music.

This event is part of the College's Academic and Cultural Events programming, and is open to the public. "Urinetown" uses a full orchestra, and therefore requires a ticket fee of $8, with $6 for seniors and $5 for students. CANTON, MO (03/24/2014)(readMedia)-- Ian Sodawasser, senior musical theatre major from Davenport, Iowa, has been cast to perform in Culver-Stockton's musical theatre production, "Side by Side by Sondheim." The performers of C-SC's production were not assigned roles in this ensemble production; They are performing as a team, with each having an equal part.

This lively musical revue explores the many facets of Stephen Sondheim's brilliant lyrics. Sondheim is an American composer and lyricist known for his immense contributions to musical theatre, with a career spanning five decades. He is the winner of an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. This performance is often set with Sondheim's own music and occasionally given added punch through the music of composers such as Richard Rodgers or Leonard Bernstein.

Performances are April 3-5, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., with a 3 p.m. matinee Sunday, April 6. "Side by Side by Sondheim" is directed by Dr. Haidee Heaton, professor of theatre, with musical direction by Dr. Elliot Jones, professor of music and director of choral activities. Dr. Dylan Marney, professor music, is accompanying the performance on piano.

CANTON, MO (02/10/2014)(readMedia)-- Culver-Stockton students are performing a centuries-old dramatic piece as part of the spring semester fine arts offerings. Euripides' "Ion" was first produced in ancient Greece, but has overtones of contemporary drama. A tragedy with a happy ending, the plot of "Ion" includes abandoned children and jealous relatives, attempted murder and tourist attractions, sexual assault and confusing prophecies, reunited families, an overzealous chorus and appearances by two Greek gods.

Ian Sodawasser, senior musical theatre major from Davenport, Iowa, is cast as Xouthos.

"Ion" runs in the Mabee Little Theatre, Feb. 20-22 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. This performance is directed by Dr. Ron Zank, assistant professor of theatre at Culver-Stockton.

CANTON, MO (11/01/2013)(readMedia)-- Culver-Stockton College is continuing the tradition of bringing a professional actor to campus to share the stage with students in the 28th Annual Guest Artist Production. Ian Sodawasser, musical theatre major from Davenport, Iowa, has been cast to act alongside professional actor Michael Brainard in Culver-Stockton College's production of "Other Desert Cities," written by Jon Robin Baitz and directed by Dr. Haidee Heaton.The performance runs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8-9 in the Mabee Little Theatre, with a Sunday afternoon matinee at 3 p.m., Nov. 10. Sodawasser has been cast as the understudy of Lyman Wyeth.

This is Brainard's second time participating in C-SC's Guest Artist Production. In addition, Brainard has had a long career in television, cinema and theatre. His most recognizable role was as Dr. Joseph 'Jake' Martin Jr. in the television series "All My Children." He also had a recurring role on the television series "American Heiress." He is in the upcoming movie, "Mi America," scheduled for release in 2014.

The annual guest artist production is an opportunity for students and faculty to experience theatre with professional actors. Students are able to work with the actor onstage, behind the scenes and in workshops and master classes. They also have the opportunity to learn new techniques in the field and share firsthand experiences of how the profession plays out on a day-to-day basis.
