PORT BYRON, IL - The Nick Teddy Foundation, in partnership with First Wealth Financial Group of Clinton, IA, is pleased to announce proceeds results for its Third Annual "Nick Teddy 5k." !

This year, the Port Byron-based foundation will donate $10,000 to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, to be used to fund Ewing's sarcoma research. The rare pediatric bone cancer currently affects several area children and young adults. An additional $5,000 will be used to support these local patients and their families. !

The "Nick Teddy 5k" is an annual celebration of the life of Port Byron native Nicholas Theodore Strub, who died of Ewing's sarcoma in November 2011 at age 29. The Nick Teddy Foundation was established in his memory, and works to raise money for Ewing's sarcoma research, to increase awareness of the disease in the Quad City area, and to support local Ewing's patients and their families. In three short years, the foundation has donated over $52,000 to Ewing's sarcoma research. !!!!!!!!!

This year's event was held in Port Byron, IL, on Saturday, September 13, and included a 1-mile family fun run/walk, a Teddy Trot for children 6 years of age and under, and the 5k run/walk. The festivities also included kids' games, a silent auction and raffle, and an after party with food and live entertainment. !

PORT BYRON, IL - The Nick Teddy Foundation's "Nick Teddy 5k," presented by First Wealth Financial Group of Clinton, Iowa, was held on Saturday, September 13, and hosted almost 375 runners in its third annual event.

Overall male winner for the 5K race was Michael Converse of Geneseo, IL with a time of 18:47. The day's races included a 1-mile family fun run/walk, the Teddy Trot for children 12 years of age and under, and the 5k event. Breton Williams, presenting sponsor from First Wealth Financial Group of Clinton, IA, fired the starting shot to open the festivities. Members from Riverdale Elementary's 100 Mile Club ran to earn credits toward shoe charms to mark their achievements.

The annual celebration also included kids' games, a silent auction and raffle, and an after party with food and beverage by D's Smokin BBQ and Catering of Albany, IL, and the new River Bottom Chop House of Port Byron, IL. Entertainment was provided by local artist Jordan Danielsen.

Nick fought a courageous battle against the pediatric cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, for more than 5-years, until he died at age 29.

Proceeds from the "Nick Teddy 5k" will benefit the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative (www.sarcomahelp.org), which works to award sarcoma research grants to expert investigators around the world. Several area children currently are affected by this disease. In 2013, the event registered more than 400 runners and raised over $25,000. $20,000 was donated to be used exclusively for Ewing's sarcoma research. Half of the remaining proceeds was disbursed to a local Ewing's patient to help defray family costs of travel and lodging during treatment, and half was held in reserve to assist other area patients as needed.

PORT BYRON, IL - The Nick Teddy Foundation collected nearly 150 teddy bears in August for its Teddy Bear Drive.  Several area locations accepted bears throughout the month.

Bears will be donated to pediatric patients at Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, IL, http://www.childrenshospitalofillinois.org  and to grieving and traumatized children served by Rick's House of Hope in Davenport, IA.  http://rhoh.org

A contest at Riverdale Elementary in Port Byron netted 100 bears for the effort.  Classes competed to collect the most bears, with the winning classroom to be rewarded with its choice of either a root beer ?oat or a pizza party.  Drive coordinator Jamie Rice commented, "I think this is a great way to get the kids involved in giving back to the community."

A "Bear Tree" with a sample of the donations will be on display at the Foundation's 2nd Annual "Nick Teddy Fight Against Ewing's Sarcoma 5k" in Port Byron on Saturday, September 14 in Port Byron.

PORT BYRON, IL - The Nick Teddy Foundation, in partnership with First Wealth Financial Group of Clinton, Iowa, reminds folks to register early for the 2013 "Nick Teddy Fight Against Ewing's Sarcoma 5K."

Runners have until Sunday, September 1, to register for the event at the discounted rate. If runners miss early registration, they still will be able to register online until Friday, September 13th, or sign up at the event on race day, but a $5 late fee will apply.

More than 75 participants have already registered to hit the pavement. Proceeds will benefit sarcoma research through the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, and provide support for local Ewing's patients and their families.
