October 15, 2015 - The Iowa Tourism Office has released new data showing continued growth in the state's tourism industry.  In 2014, travel-generated expenditures in Scott County totaled almost $622 million, an increase of 3.89% over 2013.

Over the past five years, travel-generated expenditures for the entire state of Iowa have increased by an average of 5.94 percent, beating the five year national average of 5.78 percent. According to the study, "The Economic Impact of Travel on Iowa Counties," travelers spent $8.06 billion in Iowa and generated $374 million in state tax revenues in 2014, both all-time highs.

The report also revealed that more than 66,500 Iowans owe their employment to the tourism industry, a 1.6 percent increase from 2013. Without jobs generated by domestic travel, Iowa's 2014 unemployment rate of 4.4 percent would have been 8.3 percent. The tourism industry employs 6,100 people in Scott County.

Based on preliminary numbers we're seeing for this year, we have every reason to believe our growth will continue," said Shawna Lode, manager of the Iowa Economic Development Authority's Iowa Tourism Office. "In 2015 we expect about 1.5 million people to visit our website, traveliowa.com, an increase of approximately 40 percent from 2014."

The entire report is available online in .pdf format and includes state- and county-specific data. Link to the news release from the State of Iowa

In Scott County, travel-generated expenditures in 2014 totaled $621.67, employed 6,100 people and generated $9.34 million in state taxes. Tourism in Iowa generates $8.06 billion in expenditures, employs 66,500 people statewide and generates $374 million in state taxes.

The Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (QCCVB) is the official tourism destination marketing and management organization for the Quad Cities region.  The organization serves the tourism interests of Scott County in Iowa and Rock Island, Mercer, Warren and Henderson Counties in Illinois. The QCCVB increases visitor expenditures and overnight stays through strategic sales, marketing, and services.  The Quad Cities averages over 1 million visitors a year that generate an $800 million economic impact on the local economy.

State legislators will be making important decisions about the future of energy in Illinois this year.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently made history by announcing that for the first time, it will require carbon to be treated as a pollutant.  This gives Illinois the chance to move towards a cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy economy while creating thousands of jobs.  There are several proposals in Springfield that address energy issues that are under consideration this year and next.

Experts from several environmental organizations will give information on the Clean Power Plan and on the proposed Illinois Clean Jobs bill.  Representative Mike Smiddy will attend and provide his insight into overall energy issues in Springfield.

Quad Cities - This weekend the Quad Cities is host to 400 attendees of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Big 10 Conference at the Isle Casino Hotel and Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf.

This conference brings together VFW members and Ladies Auxiliary members from 10 Midwest states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin).  It is on a 10-year rotation for hosting so Iowa won't have the opportunity again until 2025.

There is a reception on Friday night, sessions all day Saturday, and a banquet Saturday night.

The Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates the local economic impact is over $290,000.

The Department of Iowa VFW is an organization that supports Veterans and their families with providing a voice to the National VFW to make sure that the Veterans that fought in Wars in the past and the Veterans that will fight in Wars in the future have the benefits and support of a grateful nation.
There is a group departure of cyclists out of the Riverdale Middle School at 7:30 a.m.

The route goes from the middle school right down to the Will B. Biking statue, the "ceremonial" start of the ride at 8 a.m.

Then right across the street from the statue, a pancake breakfast has been organized at the Port Byron fire station.

The inaugural "Will B. Rolling to Ben Bikin'" bicycle tour is October 3-9, 2015.  The tour covers portions of Northwestern Illinois and Southwestern Wisconsin and the Sparta's Fallfest is in full swing to offer riders festivities at the conclusion of the tour.  Director of Wisconsin Tourism David Spiegelberg and Sparta Chamber of Commerce Director Tim Hyma plan to be at the start in Port Byron on Sunday.  for more information, visit www.willtoben.com

In 1995, Sparta designed and manufactured a large fiberglass "man" dressed in Sparta colors (red and gold), sitting on a penny-farthing bicycle and was named "Ben Bikin."  Former Port Byron Mayor Larry Bay was impressed with the statue and commissioned a replica to be called Will B. Rolling for his town.  Bay then gifted the statue to the village in 2013.
