Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today announced that housing authorities in Iowa City and Muscatine and the Eastern Iowa Regional Housing Authority, which covers Cedar and Clinton Counties and the City of Bettendorf in Scott, will receive a total of $174,051 to provide funding for their communities to create partnerships to assist low income families in obtaining employment. This funding will help spur economic independence and self-sufficiency. The funding is provided through the U.S. Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program.

"Helping communities provide low-income families with the tools needed to find employment is a win-win situation," said Loebsack. "It is important at a time when the economy is still struggling to provide folks an opportunity to get the training they need to be able to support and care for their families."

Details of the grant funding follow.

Eastern Iowa Regional Housing Authority - $135,678

Iowa City Housing Authority - $119,673

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that the Davenport Fire Department will receive a total of $611,727 for recruitment purposes. The funding comes from the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.

"Ensuring our local fire departments have the proper staff to protect our homes, businesses and communities is very important," said Loebsack. "I congratulate the Davenport Fire Department on receiving this competitive grant. This funding will ensure they have the proper staffing to continue to safely serve the people of Davenport."

The SAFER program is designed to strengthen the nation's ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards and improve the nation's overall level of preparedness by supporting the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.

Ft. Madison, IA - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today at the event to commemorate the largest wind expansion in Iowa's history by Siemens and MidAmerican Energy. The event highlighted the impact of the job creation from the expansion project and economic benefits wind energy brings to local communities around the country. Congressman Loebsack was joined by Governor Terry Branstad, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds, MidAmerican Energy CEO Bill Fehrman and Siemens Energy CEO Mark Albanze.

"I am thrilled with today's announcement by Siemens and MidAmerican that Iowa will expand its leadership in wind energy production. This announcement means jobs for our highly skilled workforce, and demonstrates the continued strengthening and competitiveness of Iowa manufacturing. It also means continuing investment in Iowa's clean energy infrastructure. This is what encouraging our homegrown energy and the Production Tax Credit are all about - jobs and clean, renewable energy sources."

While at the event, Congressman Loebsack also reiterated his call for Congress to renew the Production Tax Credit (PTC) for wind energy that is set to expire at the end of the year. Loebsack has long supported wind energy production and led the way in the House to renew the PTC. Last year he was named a USA Wind Champion by the American Wind Energy Association.

"It's utterly unacceptable that the House packed up and left town for the holidays without extending the PTC, which is why I pushed to keep Congress in session and working. I will continue to fight to get the PTC extended as soon as possible. Despite the complete dysfunction in Washington, I'm hopeful Congress can come to an agreement. As we witnessed today, here in Iowa, the PTC isn't a partisan issue."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after the House voted on the Budget Act of 2013.

"The legislation that passed the House today is not perfect and certainly would not have been what I would have written. However, it serves as a compromise to finally break the cycle of lurching from budget crisis to budget crisis. I am pleased that this legislation takes steps to partially stop the irresponsible, across the board cuts, known as sequester that have hurt middle-class families, jobs, research, and economic development in Iowa. Though I do have serious concerns about several provisions, including extending sequestration for Medicare payments and changes to military retirement COLAs, voting against this proposal is ultimately a vote in favor of shutting down the government and allowing our economy to again be subjected to a manufactured crisis. It is my hope that this agreement is the beginning of the end for all the reckless gamesmanship and political posturing that have plagued Washington.

"Now that Congress has taken this first step, it must remain in session for as long as it takes to achieve bipartisan compromise on the farm bill, jobs initiatives, extension of unemployment benefits, and extension of critical tax credits for the wind industry, employers, and middle class families."

Press reports indicate any farm bill extension is a non-starter in the Senate

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today reiterated his call to keep the House in session until its work on many important issues, including a new, long-term farm bill, is completed. There have been recent press reports which indicate the Senate would not consider, let alone be able to pass a short farm bill extension. This situation necessitates the need for the House to remain in session and ready to work on a comprehensive farm bill.

"I don't want to be accused of being the Grinch who wants to steal Christmas, but passing a farm bill is too important for the House to pack up and go home early for the Holidays. We must stay and complete all of the work that the American people are demanding get done and if that means staying through Christmas, I am ready and willing to do just that. There is simply too much to finish in the three remaining days that the House is scheduled to be in session," said Loebsack.

Washington, D.C. - Congressmen Dave Loebsack recently led a bipartisan group calling on the leaders of the Budget Conference Committee, who are currently working to craft a long-term budget agreement, to include strong funding for Meals on Wheels and other Senior Nutrition Programs in any compromise they reach. The letter, which was signed by a bipartisan group of 48 Members of Congress, called on the Budget Conference Committee to ensure that Senior Nutrition Programs authorized under the Older Americans Act (OAA) are not further reduced from current levels.

Due to cuts cause by sequestration earlier this year, Meals on Wheels and congregate programs across the country have been forced to cut meals served to seniors, eliminate staff positions, lower meal quality, reduce delivery days and/or close sites. The situation has been exacerbated by the economic downturn and increased numbers of seniors needing meals.

"Our constituents and Americans across the country who rely on Senior Nutrition Programs are already experiencing the real, daily effects of sequestration-related cuts to these benefits. These cuts directly affect the health and well-being of our most vulnerable, frail and isolated senior constituents and prevent programs from maintaining services, much less meeting the needs of an aging population," the Members of Congress wrote. "We urge you to do all you can to reverse sequestration-related cuts to the Senior Nutrition Programs that provide a lifeline to our elderly population. We must let congregate and home-delivered meal programs get back to work and allow those they serve to live with independence and dignity."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the renewable fuel volume obligations (RVOs) under the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) for 2014.

"It is clear that this Administration has done a complete 180 on their support for biofuels. Today's announcement is a devastating decision for Iowa's farmers, rural communities and economy. It will also only increase our dependence on foreign oil at the expense of homegrown fuel. It is a slap in the face to our homegrown industry and Iowa's economy that once again Big Oil has dictated our energy policy while stomping on rural America and hampering efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. I believe in making things in America and there is no reason our fuels shouldn't be made here as well.

"The numbers for renewable fuel and biodiesel released by the EPA are completely unacceptable and I will fight to ensure that Iowa farmers are able to continue move our nation on a sustainable path forward."
