Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today announced that law enforcement jurisdictions across eastern and southeastern Iowa will receive $36,553 through the U.S. Department of Justice Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP).  The BVP provides funding to state and local law enforcement jurisdictions for purchasing critical bullet-resistant body armor for law enforcement officers.

"It is vital that our law enforcement officers have the safety equipment they need to protect themselves as they protect all of us," said Loebsack.  "This live saving funding will allow our local law enforcement to purchase the state-of-the-art bulletproof vests our officers deserve."

Jurisdictions receiving the funding include : Albia, Bettendorf, Clinton, Coralville, Henry County, Iowa City, Keokuk, Knoxville, Lee County, Louisa County, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Pella, Scott County, Sigourney, and Van Buren County.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack, in response to the announcement that the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security beneficiaries in 2013 will be 1.7 percent, called on the Social Security Administration (SSA) to reform the way this adjustment is calculated.

"I was raised in poverty by my grandmother, who relied on Social Security survivors benefits to care for my brothers and me, so I understand how difficult it is for seniors to get by on fixed incomes," wrote Loebsack.  "Particularly in these difficult times, it is imperative that Social Security benefits keep up with inflation.  It is important to remember that the yearly COLA is not a benefits increase, but rather it is intended to ensure that monthly payments keep up with the rising costs of essential expenses."

The COLA in 2012 was 3.6 percent, after two years of no COLA in 2010 or 2011.  Loebsack urged the SSA to work with Congress to reform the way the adjustment is determined to ensure that benefits keep up with the increase in seniors' everyday expenses.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today wrote to the United States Postal Service expressing his concerns about possible post office closures.  The USPS will soon be holding meetings in communities across Iowa regarding the plans for individual post offices.  Loebsack pushed the Postmaster General to make clear how this process will be carried out, and stressed the importance of listening to community input as these decisions are made.

"I am concerned that the Postal Service may move forward with post office closures, despite their plan to keep offices open with possible service hour reductions," said Loebsack.  "I urge the USPS to carefully consider local input as they move forward with these public meetings, and request information about how the process will be carried out to ensure that the process is transparent and takes into account the needs of each community."

Loebsack is a cosponsor of H.R. 1351, which would address the USPS's financial needs without the upheaval and job loss that post office closures would cause.  He has urged leadership to address postal reform as soon as possible.  A copy of the letter Loebsack sent is available here.

Because of Republican inaction, farm policy reverts to 1949 law

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the 2008 farm bill was allowed to expire without being extended or renewed.  Because of the inaction by Congressional Republicans, farm policy now reverts back to laws written over 60 years ago.

"It was just another thumb in the eye to rural Iowans when Republicans closed up shop in Washington and gaveled down Congress until after the election without even considering an extension of a farm bill.  This is simply inexcusable to punt the issue down the road when Iowa farmers continue to deal with the worst drought in decades.

"I have shown my willingness to work across the aisle to help our farmers and actually get work done.  And I have called on Congress to come back in session to deal with this and many other critical issues that are just sitting on the table. Now is the time for leaders on both sides of the aisle to work together and find a way forward.  Our farmers, livestock producers and rural communities deserve nothing less."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today announced that the City of Davenport will receive a $100,000 grant to establish a year round farmers market.  The funding comes from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farmers Market Promotion Program.

"This funding will help to connect local farmers to the local community and consumers," said Loebsack.  "In addition to promoting new economic opportunities and growth in the area, the expanded farmers market season will provide new opportunities for farmers and increased access to fresh and healthy products for consumers."

The funding will be used to improve infrastructure at the Freight House Farmers Market that will facilitate a year round market for local and regional foods, including refrigerated storage and value added processing and packaging equipment, infrastructure for electronic purchasing, and a certified kitchen incubator for educational training and classes for producers and consumers.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the Republican led Congress closed up shop until November to go home and campaign. From August 3rd through November 13th, the House leadership only scheduled a total of eight days of voting, while a mountain of critical work was left on the table.  Among the issues that have not been dealt with include :

  • Farm bill,
  • Middle class tax cuts,
  • Wind energy production credit,
  • Sequestration,
  • Comprehensive jobs package,
  • Research and development credit,
  • Violence Against Women Act,
  • Postal reform,
  • Sustainable growth rate,
  • Biodiesel credit,
  • Unemployment insurance,
  • National Defense Authorization Act, and
  • Expiration of Midwestern Area Disaster Bonds, to name a few.

"When the Republicans came into Congress two years ago they made a lot of promises, but in the end, all the American people got was a lot of hot air.

"Iowa farmers are suffering from the worst drought in decades and what has the Republican Congress done? Nothing.  Middle class families are facing a tax increase and what has the Republican Congress done? Nothing.  Iowa's wind energy economy is facing uncertainty and instability and what has the Republican Congress done? Nothing. Folks are still in need of finding work and what has the Republican Congress done? Nothing.  The list of inaction really does go on and on and on.

"The fact that Republican Leaders in Congress are putting the 'closed' sign on the door of the Capitol is just another one of the games they have continued to play, but frankly, it is just irresponsible.  There is too much critical work to get done before closing down.  I have been calling on Congress to remain in session since early this summer and I remain committed to getting done the work that Iowans are demanding."

Presents Congressional Record Statement to Veterans

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today welcomed ninety-two Iowa veterans of the Greatest Generation and forty-three Gold Star family members to the nation's capital and presented them with copies of the Congressional Record statement he submitted honoring their service.

The group traveled to Washington as part of the Honor Flight, which is an all expense paid trip for veterans so that they can visit our nation's capital and the memorials that were built in their honor.  Today's Honor Flight is particularly notable because Korean War veterans and Gold Star families, who have lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan, are also joining the World War II veterans on the trip.  The Honor Flight left from the Quad Cities Airport this morning and will return tonight.

"This is truly a special Honor Flight because it brings together World War II and Korean War veterans with families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Loebsack.  "I am tremendously proud and humbled to welcome members of the Greatest Generation and our Gold Star families to our nation's capital today.  On behalf of every Iowan I represent, I thank them for their service and sacrifice."

Loebsack is an avid supporter of our veterans. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, he has worked to increase veterans' health care and benefits funding by over 70 percent and has worked to make sure that each and every veteran is treated with the dignity and honor that they deserve.

Company was first joint partnership announced under Loebsack-Schilling Arsenal law

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after he met with the leadership of Mack Defense.  Earlier this year, the Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (JMTC) and Mack Defense announced a public-private partnership.  The agreement was the first of its kind since provisions authored by Congressmen Loebsack and Bobby Schilling (IL-17) were included in the FY2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  This agreement will provide Mack Defense access to the only remaining U.S. Army foundry and the Army's only vertically integrated metal manufacturing facility and support good jobs at JMTC.

"I was pleased to meet with the leaders of Mack Defense today to get an update about the work they will be doing with the Arsenal.  I was proud to have worked with Congressman Schilling and the bipartisan delegation to give the Arsenal the ability to utilize these types of partnerships to support good jobs and strengthen the Arsenal. I will continue my work to ensure the Arsenal remains strong."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after Siemens announced they were reducing their workforce nationwide, including positions in Ft. Madison.

"Today's announcement is another reminder just how far our economy has to go to fully recover and how much work Congress should be doing. My thoughts go to those and their families who are affected by this news.

"This announcement also demonstrates the need for Congress to act and renew the Production Tax Credit for wind energy.  While this is not fully the cause, renewing the tax credit, which has broad, bipartisan support, will give the wind energy industry the stability it needs.  Congress should not be going home to campaign at a time when so much critical work remains unfinished.  The livelihood of thousands of Iowans depends on the renewal of the credit."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement in response to the announcement that the United States will take action against China at the World Trade Organization for illegally subsidizing exports in their auto and auto-parts sectors, a practice that is putting U.S. auto parts manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage.  Loebsack has been a long time supporter of several pieces of legislation that would keep jobs here in Iowa, protect our homegrown wind energy from illegally subsidized products made in China, and stop the Chinese from illegally manipulating their currency. He also specifically called on the administration to address the threat against U.S. jobs in the auto-parts sectors earlier this year.

"When Iowa workers and manufactures have a level playing field, they will outcompete any other worker in the world and today's action will help level the playing field.   At a time when our economy is still struggling to recover, we have to do all we can to focus on preserving and protecting jobs here at home by working to stop the unfair practices by China that threaten good Iowa jobs. I will continue to fight against unfair and illegal trade practices to ensure Iowans are competing on a level playing field."
